When does XNviewMP recognize new companion files?

I have a case with a .DNG that has a .XMP file (built by darktable) that is not being found and shown in the thumbnail. I have rebuilt the thumbnail for this file, with no change.
What else should I try?

Settings>File list>Show companion files

Yes, that is checked and generally works. I have found only one that doesn't. This XMP is on a JPG was built by Darktable after the catalog was built.
