I have looked thru the forums and searched and I have found some posts that touch on some of the topics however the resolutions provided do not achieve the needed results in my situation:

So I am starting a new topic and hoping for your help.







The workflow I would like to achieve pertaining only to RAW files:

XnView MP

1 Ingest RAW images to session folder / subfolders

2 Proceed to rate with star / label I set up keyboard shortcuts to rate and advance (working already)

Capture One 21

1 Create session in Capture one 21 (or catalog but mostly sessions)

2 Smart folders that filter out 3 stars 4 stars / labels / keywords or whichever criteria is needed for the specific session

3 proces raw files, recipes, output etc...

Current behavior of metadata:



In XnView MP:

Rate RAW file with 1-5 stars / Color with keyboard shortcut (this works seen on thumbnail view IE purple star and Red circle shown) | XMP is not created ratings are not carried over to Capture One 21


Rate RAW file with 1-5 stars with edit XMP dialog | XMP sidecar is created | XMP rating is carried to Capture One 21 not color label



Rate RAW file with 1-5 stars / Color with keyboard shortcut and then add a category | XMP is created and rating is carried to Capture One 21 not color label




When I use edit IPTC dialog box and add caption - the changes are seen in ExifTool 'Caption-Abstract' however Capture One 21 does not display changes under IPTC - Content | I also tested with 'Headline' XnView MP ExifTool dialog and same results


When I change the IPTC fields in capture one with or without an XMP sidecar present | XnView MP does not display the changes under ExifTool | they do however display under XMP on both instances.

My request for guidance / ELI5:

What preferences exactly need to be enabled / disabled in settings
What are the best practices to achieve the outlined workflow?

I want to press 1-5 or 6-0 and advance to next image (which I have achieved) and then add keywords / captions / specifics to scene / shoot.

have the ratings, labels and any metadata visible in Capture One 21.


At the very least I just want the stars and colors to show up in Capture One 21 without having to either open the XMP dialog box and change there to every individual image to generate a sidecar XMP file or to add a category which then generates a sidecar XMP file and carries over the star rating to Capture One 21

not exactly the in-depth user manual document I was hoping for- but still helpful for other things.

which format do you rate? could you send me a screenshot of Settings>Metadata?

ok, rating via keyborad or menu should create sidecar

as long as the folder in: is backed up all defaults and preferences set will remain, correct?

This problem is supposed to be fixed in XnView MP 0.99.4. Please check and confirm the bug fix here.

with 0.99.4 :

- XMP file created when rating my NEF files :)
- but XMP file not created when labeling my NEF files :(

Thanks to your detailed description I can reproduce the problem.

This problem is supposed to be fixed in XnView MP 0.99.5. Please check and confirm the bug fix here.
