External file systems not accessible on Fedora Linux 34/35

Hi,
I'm trying to move my workflow from Windows 10 to Fedora but I'm struggling with an issue in XnView MP on Fedora 34/35.
The issue is that the external filesystems I've got mounted are not accessible from XnView MP. If i manually load a file using the "open with" functionality the image opens but it's in fact a duplicate file created in a different location to the actual original file.
The external file systems are mounted by the native disk manager in Fedora 34/35 and are ext4 volumes (no network shares at this point although they seem to suffer from the same issue).
I found this issue posted previously but it would seem as if it never received any replies:

From my point of view it looks as if XnView is running into permission issues since the file systems are likely mounted outside of the user space?
Any tips on what I can do to resolve this issue?
