XnView stops responding when viewing a folder that contains images

XnView MP Windows
Version 0.99.4 64-bit, 0.99.5 64-bit
OS: Windows 11 version 22000.348

Some more details on what's happening—

The program always freezes ("XnView MP is not responding") if I
  • Start the file browser in any folder containing multiple image files
  • Start the file browser in a folder that contains no image files and switch to a folder that contains any number of image files
  • Start the file browser in a folder that contains no image files and move multiple images to that folder (using File Explorer or XnView)
  • Start XnView with an image and click "Browse" and the browser opens in a different folder from the image
XnView sometimes doesn't freeze if I
  • Start the file browser in a folder that contains a single image file
  • Start XnView with an image and click "Browse" and the browser opens in the same folder as the image, which can contain any number of image files
  • Start the file browser in a folder that contains no image files and move a single image to that folder
I've spent about three hours testing/troubleshooting and so far haven't been able to work out a pattern for the "sometimes". Sometimes I can get it to not freeze with a particular image and folder multiple times in a row, and other times that same image and folder will cause a freeze. While I imagine this will occur with any image type, I've only tested with png, jpg, pdn, and ico files. Sub-folders and non-image files (e.g. txt, xlsx) have no effects on this behavior.

The only time I never get a freeze is if I start in or navigate to a OneDrive folder containing one or more images on my hard drive (folders with only images in the cloud still freeze). Whenever it doesn't freeze, I can browse folders and images like normal until I exit the program. The only other thing I've noticed is that when the program freezes upon switching folders, the next time I open the browser it starts in the previous folder before the freeze (startup directory set to last).

I've tried deleting XnView's local files (ini/db), turning on/off all thumbnail-related settings, uninstalling and reinstalling, updating to 0.99.5, running in compatibility mode, clearing Windows' thumbnail cache, chkdsk in case of corrupted files, rebooting Windows, and praying to Bill Gates, all to no effect.

Everything worked fine until this started happening a week or so ago. I can't remember doing anything that might have caused such a problem, though with the occasional tinkering I do with Windows I wouldn't put it past something I've done. If anyone can offer suggestions on how to fix this, or how it might have been caused, I would be greatly appreciative.

so you had not this problem before, right?
Start the file browser in a folder that contains no image files and switch to a folder that contains any number of image files
Even 1 or 2 files?

Right and right.

XnView.db is about 2 MB, and I have tried deleting it and all my .ini files. I also cleared my registry of entries related to XnView when I reinstalled it in case of a problem there, though I've always told it to use the .ini file for settings.

Sorry, I'm not sure what you're asking. My OneDrive folder isn't shared with anyone if that's what you mean.

could you try to disable OneDrive, and see if it's the problem on browser?
