XnView Software

For many years now I have used XnViewMP and I even stopped looking for alternatives years ago. It's the best and fastest image browser and I love it.

Now for my spiel. XnViewMP needs a better printing options dialogue.

What I am wishing for is some way to use XnView to print photo collections or arrangements. There are options like "Pictures Collection" and "Thumbnails" and they work, but are very basic. I'm thinking of a more modern-era photo-grid type thingy - you guys know what I'm talking about. You know, where you can show squares on the page and adjust their borders to make a fancy grid to drop photos onto for a photo montage or something like that.

...or, maybe XnView Magister can come up with XnPhotoMontage with drag-n-drop support.

I think that it will be better to have a function for that and not only in print.

So, what I'm imagining is kind of spectacular; let me try and describe it.

First, you open the XnPhotoMontage window. There are controls to set the paper size.

Imagine your window with some rulers on the edges like in Photoshop. Imagine dragging some thick black lines onto the canvas just like you would drag photoshop guides onto the psd canvas. Let's say you drag one to the vertical middle, dividing the canvas in two down the middle. Now you have a left side and a right side. Next, you drag another line to split the left side vertically, leaving you with two squares stacked on the left, and the half-pane on the right. You can continue to drag black lines onto the canvas and divide it into further squares.

Next, imagine that when you hover over one of those lines, you get the little border-dragging cursor and you can use this to adjust the placement of the lines.

As for the lines, you can set the colour how you wish and also change their thickness.

All this allows you to design a completely custom grid. The next step is to drag images onto each square to fill your picture grid. The images will be automatically cropped to the destination square, and you could ctrl+click them to get resize/drag controls (like in InDesign) to fit the image to the square the way you like.

This window can have grid presets and line presets.

In the end, you get a completely customizable photo grid.

It would be so extremely awesome to be able to do this from XnView. I use XnView all the time and use it often to create contact sheets, but it is rather clumsy.
