How to add Keywords to XMP files?

Hi :)

I am trying to use XnView to review images before I import them into Capture One. Capture One will read any XMP files when it imports them and it's would be nice to quickly populate many of the basic title/description/keyword using XnView.

But, I can't seem to figure out how to add Keywords to XMP files. There's no Keyword tab on the Edit XMP modal :(. It would be cool to save keywords (like the category feature) that I can drag/drop onto or add to images but just have it saved to the XMP files and not use the XnView catalog since these the files will end up being imported into Capture One using it's catalog.

So.. How do I add keywords to XMP files? :) Or is that not supported?

Thanks!

Hi,

Have you validated the creation of * .xmp in the settings ?

I'm pretty new to XnView - so I apologize, I'm not sure what you're asking me to check.

XnView will create XMP files when I click on an image and select Edit XMP. I just don't see anywhere inside of that edit box to add keywords.

I think this settings may work for you aiming to add Keywords to XMP files.

You can use "edit iptc" and select mode = XMP in last tab of iptc window...
But I think the best way is to use Categories tool, even if you don't need Xnviewmp database. Categories can easily write xmp-dc:subject (flat keywords) and xmp-lr:hierarchical subject.

Thanks I'll try that too. The categories do seem nice because I can save a lot of common stuff then use them - that's handy.

Is it going to get messy having all these cf card folders (I just open xnview right on the card) added to the catalog database? Is there a way to use the category feature without adding folders and images to the database itself?

Thanks for all the help :)

See Settings >Catalog > Excluded/Included
And two options at the bottom for flash cards ...

Ah okay - it looks like if I exclude a location there then I can no longer add categories to those items. Which makes sense but my question is - if I have files on cf cards, random desktop folders, etc where I stage images to cull/rate/keyword then all those files will get added into the xnview catalog. Then, when I import and move those images into my Capture One catalog the XnView database will overtime get really cluttered with a lot of records about files that don't exist anymore.

I think it looks like I can just clear out it's database every now and then and it probably won't be an issue.

Thanks for all the help getting me going with XnView :)
