I was trying out to open files in another viewer for editing reasons and fortunately you can set file associations and default programs. So when I for example highlight a picture and press Alt+1 for configured program or F3 for system default it will open in that specific program. But the problem is, that only that file gets opened in the program and you aren't able to browse back-/forwards to its neighbour files.

For VLC (as an example) if you mark multiple files in XnView and open them in the previous way, they are able to rotate BUT only them, not the unhighlighted ones.

Is there a way to let it read the whole folder content? Usually when you open pictures in any picture/video viewer you are able to browse it's neighbours too, but with the "Open with" function, it seems to literally only open that file in a seperate instance without access to the other files in the folder.

Yes the "open with" starts the program with the chosen picture, but in other programs you are then able to navigate through your other files instead of only that one.

Here is how you can test if for youself:
- Open a picture from a folder in a picture viewer other than XnView (Windows Photos, Windows Picture Viewer, Picturereflect etc).
- Rightclick on the picture and choose the "open with" function with XnView.
- The Picture opens in XnView AND you are able to browse the other files of that folder in XnView.
- If you then use the "open with" function in XnView to open that picture in another viewer it won't allow you to browse the other files.
You can skip those steps and just go to the last one, which is "open with" doesn't let you browse the other files in another program somehow.

If you do the same with Windows Photos/Picturereflect as an example, you can basically do an endless loop as they don't seem to open an instance of only that one picture, but instead behave as you would open the picture normally in delivering a file list or some sort.
