Rebuild Thumbnails hotkey & other ways.

When i organize images i use XnView MP as file manager, instead of windows explorer, right now its not thought trough for that scenario.

For instance i have two folders folder "A" and "B" next to each other, when i go into folder "A" select all, Ctrl+X then go into folder "B" and Ctrl+V and go up a directory, folder "A" still showing thumbnails, when in reality its empty.

Need to select folder "A" then go into menu View > "Rebuild thumbnails" then it shows no thumbnails for folder "A" so i know i can safely delete folder "A".

If i am reorganizing 20 folders at a time i can mistakenly delete folder that still has images in it, because in my workflow i don't even read folder names - i move files around based on thumbnails, just open folder view thumbnails then move files if needed then go to next folder etc.
After files are moved - need to delete empty folder, if folder auto update showing no thumbnails it would stand out in the list of other folders so it can safely delete it.
  • If you have questions please see how "FastStone Image Viewer" preforms above task, it automatically updates folder thumbnails after moving files away from that folder.
  • If i create New Folder inside XnView and Paste (Ctrl+V) inside "New Folder" then, go up one directory it shows no thumbnails until manually updated, even if i move that newly created folder to other location (Ctrl+X & Ctrl+V) or even if i create "New Folder" and or "drag and drop" images inside, it still does not update thumbnails for that folder, would be nice if XnView generate thumbnails for that new folder automatically.
  • As quick workaround please provide shortcut for View > "Rebuild thumbnails" e.g. Ctrl+F5 or something.

How about save "date modified" for folder in thumbnails database and if it's changed then rebuild thumbnails for that folder automatically?

Please for now at least create keyboard shortcut for View > Rebuilding Thumbnails option, i have to use this command numerous times when organize files and move them in or out of different sub folders.

Hello,

This issue is related to, and probably a duplicate of viewtopic.php?f=62&t=43641

I would suggest to continue the discussion there.

Thanks for listening

How about save "date modified" for folder in thumbnails database and if it's changed then rebuild thumbnails for that folder automatically?
Unfortunately, looking at "date modified" is not enough and proof of ... nothing. There is always 2 parts to discuss, if "date modified" is modified or is NOT modified :
part one : if "date modified" is modified, it is a proof that the image COULD be changed ... or just re-saved unchanged !
part two : if "date modified" is not modified, it is NOT a proof that the image was NOT changed. There is a lot software which have -fortunately this time- the option "keep original date". (1)

Same thing if you check other properties -like file size- it is possible that ANY properties of ALL files have changed and one or more files have changed. (2)
conversely it is possible that NONE file properties have be changed, but file changed.just swap names : the first four files could be not the same to be "thumbnailed"

So,
part one : if files are modified inside Xnview, Xnview know them and know what is done, so Xnview is able to -and, our demand, must do- check if thumbnails have to be rebuild or not - and do all needful rebuilds.

part two : if files have been modified (3) outside Xnview, Xnview will be able or not to detect all changes, so it is necessary to have a command to refresh display, 1 or 2 or 3 commands :
#1 : "refresh" = refresh icons and thumbnails of files
#2 : "rebuild thumbnails" = refresh thumbnails of first files in subfolders, first sub level
#3 : "rebuild recursively thumbnails" = refresh thumbnails of first files in subfolders, recursively all level of selected or active folder

(1) My way of working :
If on First January, I correct a picture -example remove the "red eyes"- I want to keep the this picture with the others shooted at the same date
-with those at Christmas for example.
And if at Eastern, I'll correct metadata -example correct "Crhistmas" in "Christmas"- files have be changed, but none properties

(2) conversely, some simple transformations -like swap Black and White, or swap left an right- could result in same size files, but different images

(3) created/removed/or changed in any way: name, content, properties, metadata, or what else you want

Replicated 1.4.2

- Move all images from a folder (source) to another folder (target) dragging them (within XnviewMP).
- Source folder is now empty but there are still small thumbnails in the source folder icon, and target folder icon is neither updated.

Thanks for listening

You drag&drop all files from a folder into another folder in the folder's tree, and some thumbnails are still here after but not the files, right?
