Is there a way to extract jpgs from Thumb.db?

Recently my 2TB HDD suddenly died with no chance of recovery and it contained a lot of valuable images for me. Is there a way to at least extract their thumbnails from XnView's Thumb.db? I tried Thumbs Viewer, Thumbcache Viewer, decThumbsDBViewer, ExtractJPEG and some other things, but they all failed. Anything else I could do?

Thumbnails are typically small (e.g. 192 x 144 px) unless you have forced XnView to use larger thumbnails. I'm hesitant to say it but I doubt that there's much use in little thumbnails but maybe better than nothing. Maybe Pierre (xnview) can provide a way to extract thumbnails from your thumb.db or do it for you as an individual one-time service. I cross my fingers that you'll find a way to restore your images.

Happily I've never had that experience, but I was by chance reading recently and not for the first time that very often data can be recovered from a failed drive: if the images are irreplaceable have you considered seeking professional help, maybe from a computer store or other source?
