XnView Software

I just installed the latest XnView MP.

I noticed a couple differences between viewing photos in Microsoft Photos and XnView MP:

1. When I told Microsoft Photos to "View actual size" on an image, and then told XnView MP to show the "Real size" for the same file, they actually showed them at different zoom levels.

2. Microsoft Photos seems to display the image with colors that are a bit more vivid than XnView MP.

Here's a screenshot showing Microsoft Photos (left) next to XnView MP (right), with both of them showing the exact same file at 100% zoom. Notice how XnView MP is zoomed in a bit more, and not quite as vivid as Microsoft Photos:

I noticed this with some different images too - both HEIC and JPG files. I wonder which program is showing the correct zoom level and the correct colors?

"Real size" is based on the dpi of screen a picture, so perhaps "view actual size" is a 100%

could you post the original file?do you use ICC color profile?

Tools > Settings... > General -- ICC tab

Default seems to be unselected.

So "Real size" isn't the real size? That makes no sense! …and where is this supposed "view actual size"? I looked for a command with that name, but couldn't find any such thing. (well, not on 0.99.7, at least)
…but I did find a 100% zoom command. And I can confirm that it gives a quite significantly different result, to the wrongly named "real size" command.

"real size" is not 100%, your photo will be displayed with same as print size

Thanks, enabling the ICC profile and setting Zoom to 100% instead of using "real size" fixed both problems.

One other problem I just noticed is that when I right-click on an image in XnView MP, go to Zoom, and set it to anything other than 100%, it will still have the magnifying glass and the * next to 100% the next time I right-click it and go to Zoom.

Attached is a screenshot of a photo I zoomed in to 1600%. You can tell because it's so pixelated. But when I go back into the Zoom menu, it still has the magnifying glass and * on 100%. Shouldn't it be on 1600%?

magnify glass is only an icon for 100%

…and the * indicates that the keyboard shortcut for 100% zoom is *.
Much like the Ctrl+/, =, and -, that are shown on "Real size", Zoom in, and Zoom out, respectively, in your screenshot, due to those being the keyboard shortcuts for those commands.
(and if one changes or removes the shortcuts, under Settings - Interface - Shortcuts, the new shortcut will be shown instead …or, if you set them as "none" instead, nothing is shown)

Having a magnifying glass as icon for 100%, is rather ironic, BTW, given that it is the one and only state, in which there is no zoom whatsoever. (and, hence, no magnifying or minimizing)

From what I understand, setting view zoom level to %100 is NOT enough. We also need to set X, Y values of DPI to 100 of the specific image for both to get the real size either on screen (meausured with real ruler) or when printed.
