Open folder with images to see thumbnails.
Then double-click one image to open Viewer mode then select tiny area and zoom in with middle mouse button.
Double click left mouse button to go back to thumbnails mode.
Now open image in viewer again and it will open zoomed in.
If you close Viewer mode by pressing ESC button then zoom is reset, if you close Viewer with "double-click left mouse button" or "ENTER" button then zoom remembered.

Thank you for your problem report, FKCapitalism.
I think this is more a feature than a bug:
- If you double-click left mouse button you will switch to XnView browser without closing existing tab/image. When double-clicking on the appropriate thumbnail, XnView doesn't reopen a new tab but will focus the appropriate tab.
- If you press Esc you will close the tab/image. When double-clicking on the appropriate thumbnail, XnView will open the image in a new tab and apply (Auto) zoom settings.

An addendum which might help to understand better (at least it helped me

):
- When double-clicking on a opened tab containing an image, setting "Double-click on tab": "Close tab" is applied .
- When double-clicking on an opened image, setting "Use double-click to switch between" in "Interface | Switching modes" is applied. Opened tab remains opened and is not closed.

To me i view it as a bug because i have
disabled tab's and hidden tabs entirely (as i want very simple viewer without any additional features and extra learning curve, all i need from viewer is thumbnails and full screen, all edits, cropping, color adjustments i do in Photoshop)

Could this behavior be changed when tabs are disabled (only 1 tab enabled)?
i.e. if only one tab mode is enabled always close the tab when exiting full screen mode including when double clicking image and/or using middle mouse button.
Perhaps there could be additional checkbox in options to enable this or user could specify "Maximum of view tabs = 0" (zero) to disable remembering the zoom level.

On second thought if this not a bug then very confusing behavior.
For people who don't want to use tabs view at all, this is not obvious what is going on and why image opens zoomed.
When you use arrow keys or mouse wheel to switch between images it does reset zoom without closing tab.
Can author please code additional check:
IF option
view > tabs > show is unchecked THEN always reset zoom upon focusing image tab.
