How to RELIABLY embed keywords to jpg images?

Hi there Everybody,

being in urgent need for clear, step by step, for dummies :-) instructions how to embed IPTC keywords to a jpg image. In the same way like Photo Mechanic or Fotostation do.

When I test uploaded my images to various photo agencies, the keywords got lost. All other IPTC fileds - like Caption, Copyright, Credit, Byline, etc - were there, but keywords went missing.

My workflow: I start off with tiff images, then batch convert them to jpgs, then fill in all the IPTC fields, then FTP upload them.

Maybe I should fill in the Iptc fields BEFORE the converting, or it doesn't matter, which I do first?

Thanks for any help - I need to be 100% sure the keywords are there & embedded, otherwise I cannot use this otherwise excellent piece of software professionally, as my clients rely only on keywords when doing an image search.

I don't know how work Photo Mechanic or Fotostation. Do you see the IPTC keywords of the jpeg in xnView?

That's exactly the problem: I see the keywords locally on my M1 Mac, but my agency says there are none.

Pls. excuse me for mentioning some other software :-) but I am sure you know what I mean. Both this progs are expensive and miss some features XnviewMP offers, but on the other hand apparently the keywording works well.

Aside form the price I like XnView better, but I seems for me that XnViewMP has problem with assigning & embedding keywords to jpg files - or maybe I misunderstand something?

That's why a detailed tutorial, what options to mark in the preferences and the order working of steps, would be helpful.

Do you see IPTC keywords in output jpeg (in XnViewMP)?
'Settings>Metadata - Export category to XMP/IPTC' must be enabled

Pierre, it is enabled and I can see it. Nevertheless my agency, for whatever reason, cannot.

In the "old days", we used to caption our jpg first and the convert the captioned jpg with irfan view. It somehow put everything in place, I mean the meta data, so tan that all other software could read it

in case smb would be interested, the solution was that

you should UNmark the "use the UTF-8 to write IPTC Fields" option, to find at settings/browser/metadata

Thanks Pierre of your help and fine work (and sorry for the late reply)!
