REQ: pair JPEGs and RAWs

Hello!

If it's not possible for this release, it's request for future.

Code: Select all

Options>General
[ ] Handle JPEG+RAW as one file
[ ] also for file operations
How it works:
Treat JPEG+RAW as one file - when there are two identically named files with different extensions and one extension is JPG and the other indicates some RAW file: for all browsing/viewing operations only JPEG file is used. Also there is additional info icon for thumbnail mode, indicating that the 'pairing' is used.
If 'also for file operations' is checked, all filesystem operations (moving, copying, deleting) are initiated for both files. I say 'initiate', because they are like two sequential operations, so if fe. when copying, in destination directory there is already RAW with the same name, replacement dialog displays only for RAW file.

Potential problems: What happens if, when pairing is used, JPEG is changed and saved with the same name? Well, images are still paired. It is even useful, because you adjust JPEG for display and still preserve RAW "digital negative".

XnView 1.82 <x>

You means for example CRW + THM files?

I guess yes. In Minolta there are simply two files with the same name and different extensions, fe. PICT0612.MRW and PICT0612.JPG.

I think it is slightly different:
- in CRW+THM, THM has no use for the end user
- in CR2+JPG, MRW+JPG, etc... (ie: RAW+JPG) you have 2 really usable images

-> therefore, handling CRW+THM as a single item is highly recommended
-> whereas handling RAW+JPG is mostly a user's specific need

The logic used could be the same, but options should be separate.

Well, I do not know THM files.

Why handle JPG+RAW as one file:

- RAW display is VERY slowly in XnView
- RAW is meant for postprocessing, not for immediate display
- this option should also work directly from Explorer, whereas 'Files displayed' (which can be used to hide RAWs in Browser) is Browser setting
- this option gives protection for RAW files

There can be menu options for 'paired' JPEGs like Open associated RAW, Shell Open associated RAW etc.

Some more details:
I think [ ] also for file operations should be split into:

Code: Select all

[ ] also for moving and copying [ ] also for deleting
for additional file security.

Pairing should be active only if other options define that BOTH JPEG and RAW files should appear on file list. That is because pairing should be used to hide RAW files when and only when user wants to work with both formats but speed up operations by hiding RAWs with JPEGs.

Menu options for pairing should enable quick access to separate operations on paired RAW and JPEG files, regardless of pairing options above. Options are active only if paired JPEG is selected. If selection includes also other files, operations work only on paired files. These should be:
RAW: Open, Shell Open, Copy, Copy to.., Move, Move to..., Delete
JPEG: Open, Shell Open, Copy, Copy to.., Move, Move to..., Delete
