Cannot open certain HEIC files

Some HEIC files saved from iPhone will not open in XnView MP 1.3.0. I get the error "File cannot be loaded".

These same files do open successfully in XnView MP 0.99.7.

It appears to be photos which have been rotated on iPhone and the only tabs which appear in the right hand panel are Properties and Exiftool, whereas non-rotated photos have Preview, Properties, Histogram, EXIF, Exiftool and GPS.

Presumably the iPhone is removing some metadata, but the files do open in the older version of XnView MP.

Sorry, I meant to include a sample. I have attached one.

Also, I am running on Microsoft Windows 10, version 21H2, 64-bit.

I've tried it again with the older version 0.99.7 and found that the HEIC opens ok after a clean installation, but will not open if I then install the HEIF plugin. This is the opposite of what I expected.

That’s good news.

A related issue that even in the older version I can’t Batch Rename the files using the EXIF “Date Taken”. I’ve had to do that manually and individually using the EXIF “Date/Time Original” (or one of the other dates) in the ExifTool tab. Should I raise a separate bug for that?

This problem is supposed to be fixed in XnView MP 1.3.1. Please check and confirm the bug fix here.

Yes, it seems to be fixed! The files display ok. Also, the previously missing tabs (EXIF, GPS etc) are all present in the browser. And as the EXIF data is available, Batch Rename using "Date Taken" is working for me.

I've also checked it with a large batch of HEIC files which I was having problems with.

Thanks!
