Adding metadata shouldn't duplicate raw files without user consent

Hello,
In continuation of viewtopic.php?f=62&t=44410&p=182744.
- Select some raw files,
- open "Edit IPTC" ("XMP, update or create IPTC-IIM" mode selected, not tried with another setting)
- Add keywords with keywords tab.
- Apply
What is observed:
- process is long to end...
- Each NEF (but probably same behaviour with other Raws) is duplicated (open folder in explorer to see the duplicates). Duplicate name is Filename.NEF_original
What should be observed:
No duplicate should be created unless a setting allowing for that is checked. Major drawback of raw files is the space they occupy in disks, if they get duplicated things will be even worse....
Seems to me that these duplicates are created because XnViewMP directly write metadata inside RAW files and the duplicates are backups....
I am very happy to know that XnviewMP allows editing of "embedded" metadata within RAWs. I used this kind of feature during a long time with an other software without never having problems, and I miss this feature. What surprises me is that I don't remember having seen any setting asking for user preference:
- RAW embedded metadata or XMP sidecar ?
- If raw embedded metadata then backup duplicate ?
Thanks for listening
XnviewMP 1.3.1, win 11, NEF files
