If i open folder with images then load file in photoshop for editing and photoshop creates XMP & ACR companion file for RAW then switch back to XnView MP this companion file starts to show in XnView MP even though in options i have this Show companion files unchecked.
I tried refresh F5 and companion files still show, only navigating to different folder or restarting XnView MP hides companion files.
Again to see this bug you need to navigate to folder then do one of the following.
Open using Tools > Open with select Photoshop and make edits using Adobe Camera Raw so it creates ACR/XMP file.
Navigate to same folder currently open in Xnview using Windows Explorer and manually create the companion file ACR or XMP.
Rename image file that already has companion files hidden in XnView (provided option Settings > Browser > File List > Companion files linked for copy/move/rename action is checked)
As result of any of this actions companion file will stat showing in XnView browser until you navigate out of folder or restart XnView.

Does that only concern files with an _ ?
Try to rename it to see if the problem is still there.
Just tested it has nothing to do with "_" in the filename, regular alphabetic filename affected as well.
Thanks to your detailed description I can reproduce. If files with companions are added, companions will be always shown. Need to change folder, and go back
This bug is not fixed in v1.5.0 beta, very bad experience.
Its not only companion files that show its all newly created files show in XnViwMP Thumbnails view when they are created inside same folder for instance if i run ExifTool script in thumbnails view then backup file ExifTools creates _DSC0001.jpg_original shown.
Its confusing which file is image file and which is backup because XnViewMP renders "_DSC0001.jpg_original" as image showing its thumbnail as well. also appears in thumbnail view and to hide it have to navigate away from folder and go back.
