I have some files in a folder which are listed in browser mode as shown below (also see the 1st attachment):

Image
KatrinaLaw-069_Spartacus% Blood and Sand_TV_2010
KatrinaLaw-070_Spartacus% Blood and Sand_TV_2010
KatrinaLaw-080_Spartacus% Vengence_TV_2012
KatrinaLaw-081_Spartacus% Vengence_TV_2012
KatrinaLaw-082_Spartacus% Vengence_TV_2012

After reading "How to work around Windows' restricted characters (https://mythofechelon.co.uk/blog/2020/3 ... characters), I used Windows 11 File Explorer to rename the 1st and 2nd files of "KatrinaLaw in Spartacus: Vengence" as follows (using the "꞉", Modifier Letter Colon U+A789):

KatrinaLaw-080_Spartacus꞉ Vengence_TV_2012
KatrinaLaw-081_Spartacus꞉ Vengence_TV_2012

Windows 11 File Explorer show these renamed files just fine, but in XnView, the files have disappeared (also see 2nd attachment below):

Image
KatrinaLaw-069_Spartacus% Blood and Sand_TV_2010
KatrinaLaw-070_Spartacus% Blood and Sand_TV_2010
KatrinaLaw-082_Spartacus% Vengence_TV_2012

When I rename the 2 files back (using "%"), the two files reappear in XnView.

Windows 11 Pro version: 22H2 OS build: 22621.1702
XnView Classic for Windows version: 2.51.2 (Jan 23 2023) Libformat Version: 7.136

Apparently XnView Classic doesn't handle UTF-8 character codes.

It should probably show a question-mark (?) or some other unprintable character for UTF-8 characters found in a filename, instead of not showing the file at all.

You may convert this entry to a suggestion.
