XnView MP locking up when performing batch rename

Trying to perform a batch rename on ~3,000 files but the program keeps not responding when selecting more than a hundred or so at a time.
Sometimes it locks up on the rename window, sometimes before that even appears. I'm on macOS using the latest version of XnView MP and I just get the endless spinning wheel.
I've got a good amount of RAM etc. so the computer shouldn't be struggling. It seems worse when large videos are involved (I turned the preview pane off after one locked up the program when just browsing the catalog).
I just want a really lightweight way of iterating through a large amount of image files and renaming them using a few placeholders like date, time, etc. It seems at the minute the program is trying to do too much and the UI is maybe getting in the way of things (e.g. trying to load up 3,000 file names in the rename window).
