Short Intro

If you try to work with "metadata" you get often lost. There are too much options.

XnViewMP asks for approximately 46x content XMP or 30 IPTC-IIM metadata fields.

A deeper dive into "metadata": https://iptc.org/std/photometadata/spec ... toMetadata

Which are the metadata you need now for your own workflow / database etc.?
Does everyone in your team knows which one to use?

Sample shows only xmp

Suggestion: option A

- for advanced user/admin
Option to edit iptc.ini and/or xmp.ini and mark "required field".

When set:

Hi Pierre, thx for reply...
Any marker would be brilliant, if it works like intent...

Let me know if there is any I could do...

that works
you still have to scroll through the tabs and find marked fields, but I think this is the best that can be done without much rework

it also can be done via "favorites/pinned" fields, but will require to merge all dialogs into one
Metadata - merge all Edit dialogs into single one

also, an example of how custom set of metadata fields done in Lightroom, ACDSee (via side panels)

The popup window is great! :-)
The asterix * in the GUI works.
The colour of the asterix is not easy to spot and depends on the GUI mode (dark / light mode) ... but yes, a good way to start!

Anyway: In our workflow, this new important function has to be explained and introduced to all the users and then it will be recognised and used as intent...

We can we/I check this new function?

This problem is supposed to be fixed in XnView MP 1.6.0. Please check and confirm the bug fix here.
