1.5.0 - movies are shown in preview despite settings

Hi,

I've recently upgraded to XnView MP, and I've noticed a few bugs unfortunately.

When I'm looking at a list of movies and pictures in the file browser and press enter on one of the images, the older version I had would open the image in fullscreen and allow me to navigate the images only - movies where skipped in full screen view.

After installing the 1.5.0 version, movies are now also shown in the full screen view.

I've had a look at the settings:
  • Browser/File list/Custom filter/Video: this is set to "visible", "show as thumbnail" and "show in preview" are both off. The movie extensions are all listed correctly.
  • View/Misc: "Show video", "Auto play (video)", and "loop video playing" are all off.
Also, as soon as a video has been shown on the screen, there is no way to exit the screen anymore. Normally, I press "Escape" to go back to the file browser, but that doesn't do anything after a video has been shown. The only way to get out of the screen is by pressing alt+f4, which closes XnView MP completely.

Can anyone look into this please?

I've just downloaded the 1.5.2 version (64 bit) and installed it, this version shows the exact same behaviour.

Hi,

Sorry for the late reply... Everything was working fine after I downloaded a new version, but now I switched to 1.7.2 and the problem is the same again.

No matter what I choose for the preview setting for movies, movies are always shown in the preview thumbnail.

Could you please check this?

Marlon

there is some changes since 1.5.5, 'custom filter' has no more preview settings.
So you would like to have video files in browser, but if you click on them, you would like nothing in the preview (first frame or video player)??

Hello Pierre,

Yes, in the browser list I would like to see a list of all files (images, movies, audio, text, etc...), but only images should be shown in the preview window.

Before I updated XnView MP I had previews for movies (and audio files) as well, but I was able to turn these off in the settings. After the update I can change the settings, but the preview is still there.

Thanks,

Marlon

I'm neutral on the subject of returning "Show in Preview" column, but whats the purpose of not showing files in Preview (speed, privacy, etc)?
I like customization, but sometimes there's just too much of it.

Hi user0,

It's purely speed for me. I've noticed that, when movies are shown and I'm traversing a list of files, it takes a long time to go from one line to the next in browser mode. Sometimes XnViewMP even hangs while loading the movie.

Since both my day job and hobbies involve working with computers, I tend to avoid using the mouse (because of my wrist), so I navigate throughout lists with the keyboard instead of dragging a scrollbar and clicking to select.

So when going through a list of files with the arrow keys or with page up/down, it takes a whole lot longer to go through a list with previews for movies (and audio) on, compared to only having previews on for images.

Though I do agree that too much customization can be a bad thing, in this case the functionality was already there (I've used it for months), and now it doesn't work as expected in the latest version. I'd rather classify that as a bug than customization, in this case.

Having said that, I would like to emphasize the fact that XnViewMP was and still is an awesome piece of software, I haven't come across a single possible competitor!

Kind regards,

Marlon

what do you think if i add a hidden setting to use Settings>View>Filter for Browser - Preview?

Hello Pierre,

I'm afraid I don't quite understand your suggestion.

In the current version, in Settings > File List > Custom Filter > Video, Show as thumbnail is not checked, so I would expect video files to be shown in the file list, but when selected the preview should be blank.

Suppose you add a hidden setting to hide the preview for videos, would that not clash with the existing setting? What would happen if someone checks "Show as thumbnail" and selects "hide video preview"?

Perhaps I misunderstood what you meant. At this moment, I would expect this functionality to be already present, yet not working.

Kind regards,

Marlon

Right, if 'Show as thumbnail' is not checked for Video, video preview should be disabled
:bugconfirmed: Thanks to your detailed description I can reproduce the problem.

Hello,

First post on the forum, thank you for your excellent software by the way from a fellow frenchman (unless you're québecois or belgian ? I didn't really check). I have used it for a long time now and usually all the solutions to my problems are on the forum, so it's not only a great software but also a great community.

v1.7.2 here and the aforementioned "show in preview" column seems to have disappeared in File List.

Therefore, I see no solution to the video preview problem.

Thank you in advance and thanks again for the soft.

EDIT : Even with "view as thumbnail" disabled, the video does play in the preview pane.

Auto playback on videos is extremely heavy and afaik a big no-no in any kind of environment (desktop, web....), I can't think of a popular soft with auto video playback on hover or click. Even video previews on hover on web are actually just small slideshows and carousels and definitely not playback -- let alone with sound enabled...
It is resource-intensive, extremely visually noisy, also catastrophic for privacy.
I do not think this falls anywhere near "too customizable", also it used to be a feature, and a useful one.

I tested this in v0.97.2 and it works perfectly fine.
I have thumbnails for videos and no playback in preview and it works fine. I mostly upgraded to a newer version to get the "XMP sidecar only for videos" functionality but I guess no playback is more important for me. I'll probably just use the 1.7.2 to add metadata to my videos and use the 0.97.2 for the time being.

Thanks anyway !

This problem is supposed to be fixed in XnView MP 1.8.0. Please check and confirm the bug fix here.

Works on my machine, if videos aren't shown as thumbnails, they won't preview.
No option to get thumbnails and no preview though.

Thanks
