JPEG XL HDR images on a non-HDR-cabable system appear dark and dull

Opening JPEG XL HDR images in XnViewMP on a system that does not support HDR makes the images appear dark and dull compared to opening the same image with a program that seems to handle HDR better, like the Thorium web browser in my example.

Sample image can be found here:
Screenshot showing the difference:
XnViewMP - 231017 - JPEG XL HDR dull dark.jpg
My environment:
  • Windows 11 22621
  • XnViewMP 1.6.1 x64
  • Laptop that doesn't support HDR (Dell XPS 7590 with 1080p non-HDR panel)
  • External monitor that supports HDR10 according to manufacturer (Samsung LS27A600NAUXEN), but Windows 11 say they don't support HDR.
Programs that seem to display this sample image correctly:
  • GIMP v2.10.34
  • Paint.NET v5.0.11 with pdn-jpegxl v1.0.5
  • PhotoQt v3.4
  • Thorium Browser (thorium-win-avx2) v117.0.5938.157

It helps for image, but not for miniature. Miniature is stile greyed like on left sample.

Then I'd like to change this to a feature request.

User story: As a non-technical user I expect an image viewer to display a valid image correctly by default. HDR images will likely get more common in the future.
Feature rquest: Change default behavior to decode using embedded ICC profile if present.

The first thing I did was delete the entire thumbnail database and build them from scratch. Did not help.

I agreed withz o-l-a-v — HDR images will likely get more common in the future. It's time to do XnView friendly for HDR :)

Please see viewtopic.php?f=62&t=46386 I'm pretty sure using ICC does not work for thumbnail, at least in 1.6.1.
(Of course I tried to rebuild it multiple times.)

IIRC it worked before.

Here's an image that doesn't look right even with ICC enabled in XnView MP v1.6.1:

This problem is supposed to be fixed in XnView MP 1.6.2. Please check and confirm the bug fix here.

It looks correct in XnView MP v1.6.2 as far as I can see, great. :)
