Subject: 1.6.3: Linked Companion File Action Behavior Different in Browser vs. Single Viewer vs. Compare Viewer

XnView: MP 1.6.3 - 64 bit
OS: Windows - 64bit

Description:
When actions for linked companion files are enabled, the behavior is different depending on whether the action was initiated in the Browser, the Single Image Viewer, or the Compare Viewer.

Effect:
  • In Browser
    • Rename: Applies to all linked companion files
    • Copy to: Applies to all linked companion files
    • Move to: Applies to all linked companion files
    • Delete: Applies to all linked companion files
    • Drag/Drop: Applies to all linked companion files
  • In Single Image Viewer
    • Rename: Applies to all linked companion files
    • Copy to: Applies ONLY to the RAW file (instead of all linked companion files)
    • Move to: Applies ONLY to the RAW file (instead of all linked companion files)
    • Delete: Applies to all linked companion files
  • In Compare Viewer
    • Rename: (action not available here?)
    • Copy to: Applies ONLY to the RAW file (instead of all linked companion files)
    • Move to: Applies ONLY to the RAW file (instead of all linked companion files)
    • Delete: Applies ONLY to the RAW file (instead of all linked companion files)

To reproduce:
  • In Browser
    1. Select an image file
    2. Right-click on that file and select from the Rename, Copy to, Move to, or Delete actions as desired -or- perform a drag/drop action
  • In Single Image Viewer
    1. Right-click on the image and select from the Rename, Copy to, Move to, or Delete actions as desired
  • In Compare Viewer
    1. On the toolbar for one of the compare images, select from the Copy to, Move to, or Delete actions as desired

Actual behaviour (bug): :bug:
When actions for linked companion files are enabled, those actions do not always apply to all linked companion files, depending on whether in the Browser, the Single Image Viewer, or the Compare Viewer.

Expected behaviour:
When actions for linked companion files are enabled, those actions should always apply to all linked companion files regardless of whether in the Browser, the Single Image Viewer, or the Compare Viewer.

Thank you!

What do you have in Settings>Companions?

If I am looking in the correct place for those settings, I still have the same settings configured as posted in the screenshot attached to the initial post in this thread:
Image

Typed out, the main settings under Tools > Settings > File List > Companion Files are as follows:
  • Show companion files: Unchecked
  • Link companion files for the following actions:
    • Delete: Checked
    • Copy/Move/Rename: Checked

A key part of the challenge here is that in certain cases those settings appear to be followed for delete/copy/move/rename actions while in other cases they don't seem to be followed for delete/copy/move/rename actions.

Thank you!

Is there anything additional that might be needed to help ensure this is included in an upcoming release?

There is a similar bug report also related to sidecar / linked companion files not being acted on. While these might not be the exact same issue, they both relate to sidecar / linked companion files essentially becoming detached and left behind.

Also related to issues with linked companion / sidecar files, I have been able to reproduce the following on 64-bit version 1.7.2.
