'Auto image size' should be 'Auto image zoom'

'Auto image size' should be 'Auto image zoom'
'Auto image size' does not change image *size*, it changes the image zoom so should be renamed to 'Auto image zoom' for clarity.
EDIT - 'Auto zoom' would actually be better and fit with styling of 'Zoom in', 'Lock zoom', etc.

Re: 'Auto image size' should be 'Auto image zoom'
+1
I would also shorten it to "Auto zoom", as
- context is alredy provided (we are in image viewing app)
- zooming may apply to video files in future

Re: 'Auto image size' should be 'Auto image zoom'
Fair point. What else would we be zooming other than an image?!
Re: 'Auto image size' should be 'Auto image zoom'
View > Image size... might possibly be clearer, I think?
Looking at the available options, that would cover all but the last Fit window to image, wouldn't it?

video, maybe pdf
It does not (re)size image, it zooms image automatically to the window size.cday wrote: Fri Feb 23, 2024 8:00 pm View > Image size... might possibly be clearer, I think?

Sizing only happens with 'Fit window to image' option and it affects window size.
Also there is similarly worded option already exists - Resize... (that shall be renamed to Resize image...)
Re: 'Auto image size' should be 'Auto image zoom'
We probably agree that View > Auto image size... is not ideal, not immediately clear?
But we all naturally prefer our own suggestions...
Is there really a meaningful difference, Image size... seems clear to me?user0 wrote: Fri Feb 23, 2024 8:16 pm It does not (re)size image, it zooms image automatically to the window size.

I don't really see an issue with having both View > Image size... and Image > Resize ... or your proposal Image > Resize image....Also there is similarly worded option already exists - Resize... (that shall be renamed to Resize image...)

Re: 'Auto image size' should be 'Auto image zoom'
I'd go for misleading.
Re: 'Auto image size' should be 'Auto image zoom'
Yeah, 'Auto zoom'.
I also offered a few language suggestions, including this one, at viewtopic.php?p=196222#p196222 (in case you hadn't seen it).
Re: 'Auto image size' should be 'Auto image zoom'
For me, View > Auto Zoom... is not sufficiently clear, neither Auto nor to a lesser extent Zoom are really clear enough.
I prefer View > Image size... so:
View > Image size... > Fit image to window
View > Image size... > Fit image to window, large only
View > Image size... > Fit image to window, small only
View > Image size... > Fit image to width
View > Image size... > Fit image to Height
View > Image size... > Fit image to width or height
View > Image size... > Fit window to image
Those are all except the last image sizes, aren't they?
Edit:
If there is a general preference for 'zoom', I think View > Image zoom... would be better than Auto zoom...

But we should be thinking of which wording would be most clear to a new user of the software.
Re: 'Auto image size' should be 'Auto image zoom'
I agree that 'auto image size' is not good...
'Display settings'?
'Display settings'?
Pierre.
Re: 'Auto image size' should be 'Auto image zoom'
Or maybe 'Display options...' as they are really options rather than settings, if you don't like the previous suggestions?xnview wrote: Mon Feb 26, 2024 1:27 pm I agree that 'auto image size' is not good...
'Display settings'?
There are multiple options, but only one parameter that is 'set', the selected option, so actually 'Display setting...' (singular) would be more logical. Pedantic?

Re: 'Auto image size' should be 'Auto image zoom'
It sounds too general for only auto zooming items and if go this path, it feels like some other options shall be incorporated inside.Display settings / options
I think 'Auto' shall stay.
It can be 'Auto fit' (valid for all menu options), but since this submenu belongs to the zooming menu group I prefer 'Auto zoom' as simple and easy to understand (even if last option falls off the list).
words I do not like:
- 'image' - is redundant and missleading, as it not only affects content (image, hope video in future), but window size as well
- 'size' - I read it as size in pixels or file size in the first place, hence 'Auto size' is a little bit missleading for me
Few examples
ps. offtop, I also had an idea to regroup zoom items inside single Zoom menu, so no such hassle anymore

Zoom - group menu items

Somewhat agree, especially for settings...user0 wrote: Mon Feb 26, 2024 1:53 pmDisplay settings / options

But what is 'auto' about a user selecting an option??I think 'Auto' shall stay.
'image' - is redundant as it is obvious that this affects image, moreover it shall affect video as well
I'm sure there is some potential ambiguity in many menu items, hard to avoid when using short text...'size' - I read it as size in pixels or file size in the first place, hence 'Auto size' is not

But for a new user of the software, I think View > Image size... or something similar is clearest -- and in any case the meaning is immediately clear when clicking on the menu item, which is what users do...

Edit: I'll read the thread again later and suggest other possible options if you don't like that suggestion.
Re: 'Auto image size' should be 'Auto image zoom'
But it's not image size that is being changed here. It's the zoom factor. And it's being offered as 'auto' options.
'Auto zoom...' is clear, succinct and precise.
