XnView Software

I just discovered that with 1.6.5 on my M2 Pro Mac (Ventura 13.6.5) that thumbnails for Sony HEIF (HIF file extension) are not displayed. I verified that it works properly on Windows 11. This is how it looks on the Mac:


Thumbnails are displayed in Finder.

I also discovered that if I double click to open one of them it is opened in the Mac Preview program rather than by XnView. On Windows 11 it is handled properly and opened in XnView.

In addition, I discovered that if I select 2 or more of the photos and press Shift-C that it does not bring up a side-by-side view. Nothing happens. This works properly on Windows 11.

I was traveling with my little Windows 11 laptop and was happy that HEIF was supported, but now I am home with my much more powerful Mac and I am saddened to discover that it does not work. I hope I am just doing something wrong.

If you click on the HIF, do you have the preview?

Not in XnView like on Windows. XnView opens the Mac program Preview to display the photo. As I wrote above:

By the way, thank you very much for XnView. I have been finding some small problems, but mostly it is working well on Windows 11 for HIF files. I hope that I can get it working properly with HIF files on MacOS too since that is what I use most of the time now that I am back home after traveling.

When do you think the next version will be available?

This problem is supposed to be fixed in XnView MP 1.7.0. Please check and confirm the bug fix here.

I just installed 1.7.0 on my M2 Pro Mac (Ventura 13.6.6) and it seems like the HIF file problem is fixed! I can now view HIF files from my Sony A6700 and I can compare them by selecting 2 or more of them and using Shift-C to get the compare view.

I see that 1.7.0 has now officially been released. Is it exactly the same as the early 1.7.0 I downloaded a few days ago? Or has there been more bug fixes/changes? Should I download the official 1.7.0 and install?
