I know I can display rating over the image in the preview panel, which is great. But can I also display the color label? I am coming over to XnView from Adobe Bridge, where it it nicely displayed as a background to the star rating (see attachments).

I prefer CaptureOne / Lightroom approach:
- rating
- monochrome stars
- clear indication of unassigned stars via dots
so controls always have the same size and do not jump around if center aligned
- color label
- single square with context menu
related:
Settings - thumbnail - overlay icon - add custom positioning

Yes, that color label style is also good and would be better than the current one.

looks good, but
- add few extra pixel between color label and first star
it should look like a separate thing
- make dots gray and a little bit smaller
they should not be that bright and attract much attention
- rework stars from 6 to 5
- remove '0 Unrated' star from this control (like in almost all apps)
there is another, wrong approach that should be avoided - using a special character to reset rating, such as ⨂ - Darkroom or ⦸ - Bridge
- clicking on current rating should remove it (this is the only one correct approach), eg click on 2nd star to reset to 0 (like in Lightroom, DxO)
- make stars uniform gray color
color is only adds unnecessary visual noise in that type of control. It only works when you have single star and need to show its number.
