Unable Thumbnail rebuild

Since xnView seems to treat Fuji RAF files with difficulty, (see previous posts) this may be another "Fuji" issue, but the menu item: METADATA-ExifThumnail-Exif Thumbnail Rebuild is grayed out. ALL of the options in that menu are grayed out. Further testing reveals that this function is grayed out for Sony (.arw) formats in addition to Panasonic Lumix (.RW).
I seem to be hitting a brick wall using xnViewMP with raw files where it appears to function beautifully with Jpegs.
My reasoning for wanting to rebuild embedded Jpegs is that several years ago I shot a series of travel photos with "in camera" B&W selected. All thumbnails and contact sheets in all software show the files in B&W, but if I "open" them for edit or other purposes, the color original is displayed . I followed an earlier suggestion to uncheck "Use Embedded Thumbnail" in Settings-Thumbnail, but it has no effect.
Is there any other "work around"?.
