XMP Templates - adding exif time taken to XMP

I've noticed in the XMP files created that the posts the date/time the xmp file was created.
Can i add somethign to an XMP template to get the original time taken date of the photo is is associated to?
Or set the XMP create/modify date to the time taken of the photo.
