Failure to recognize available printer

The regular deb Linux 64 bit version does not see my Canon external printer although other applications do so. The image version is OK.
There was another report of a printing recently.
My own problem that I reported printing from Linux Mint, which seemed to be cleared by restarting Mint, may possibly have actually been due to an unusual delay before my printed was displayed as an available printer. I had wondered whether a recent CUPs update had been a factor but that was only speculation.
