you means that browser is not in the folder of image when closing tab?
Do you have checked 'Settings>Interface>Select file in Browser..."?

to reproduce:
0. have 2 folders with 2 images, eg ..\A\A.png and ..\B\B.png
1. run clean app, goto Settings
- check Allow only one app instance
- press OK
2. close app

issue A
3. double-click A.png in file explorer
A.png opens in Viewer - OK
4. press Return
Browser opens - OK
5. double-click A.png in file explorer
A.png opens in Viewer - OK
6. press Return
nothing happens
7. press Return again
Browser opens - OK

issue B
3. double-click A.png in file explorer
A.png opens in Viewer - OK
4. double-click B.png in file explorer
B.png opens in Viewer - OK
5. press Return
Browser will open A folder

issue C
3. double-click A.png in file explorer
A.png opens in Viewer - OK
4. press Return
Browser opens - OK
5. double-click B.png in file explorer

6. press Return
Viewer will switch focus to prev Viewer tab instead of opening Browser tab

But if press left Alt and enter, next close info, and next press enter, we will find ourselves in target folder )

I offer make so :
1) open file in folder 1 - In hidden mode, read the properties of the file
2) open file in folder 2 - In hidden mode, read the properties of the file
and so on ) then bug will be fixed )
I think, what need make automaticly read line and value Filepath , if I request properties XnView MP reading Filepath and that's why correctly open folder if I press enter

Thanks to your detailed description I can reproduce the problem.

This problem is supposed to be fixed in XnView MP 1.8.6. Please check and confirm the bug fix here.
