XnViewMP 1.8.6 64bit
Windows11 (24H2), display resolution 3840x2160, win scaling 150%
Settings - formats - saving
default settings for saving format are not convenient enough as they:
- include all formats with many rarely used formats
- have most used formats on top (w/o separator it looks messy)
Suggestion

- formats_saving_list_cleanup.png (93.05 KiB) Viewed 263 times
- update 'Most used formats' list to
- avif
- bmp
- heic
- jp2
- jpg (see below)
- jxl
- png
- tif
- webp
- remove 'JPG - JPEGLI' saving variant
it's not required anymore as codec selector is available in 'JPG - JPEG / JFIF' format options
- select only 'Most used formats' by default
as all other formats are rarely used and only clutter 'save as' list
- uncheck "Show most used formats at beginning"
as it is no longer required when using a narrow list of formats

A way to add custom 'most used' formats to the 'Most used formats' list should be provided...

it can be done via Presets [<All>, <Most used>, <None>, custom..] as in other parts of the app
However, I'm not sure if you really need any custom preset for format sets, its like a onetime task. Just need a handy default set.

What if someone uses a rare format regularly, they would surely want to add it to that list?

why? they just check a checkbox for this rare format and that's it.
check how it works, the functionality will not change

You are suggesting:
1. That the existing default extensions listed at the start of the drop-down should be updated? +1
2. That a separator below those extension be added? +1
3. That existing functionality allows the displayed 'default' extensions to be either edited or new extensions to be added, for the benefit of anyone reading the thread if your suggestions are implemented, where is that setting?

It's already that?
- select only 'Most used formats' by default
as all other formats are rarely used and only clutter 'save as' list
I think that it's better to use all available formats by default in 'save as'

nope, AVIF and BMP are missing
I have not included GIF as saving in multipage format is not supported (the main purpose of this format).

I'm pretty sure 98% of users never use anything apart from 'most used' formats,
for others, it's just inconvenient scrolling/searching every time the format changes, eg:
- users are get confused with two different BMP versions
- enabled 'most used' at the top of the list look very confusing (as list expected to be AZ sorted)
imo this list should be limited to 'most used' and if user need special, rarely used format - one should go to settings and enable it
I have added a picture to the post.

In my opinion the list should be:
1. Most used formats first, those formats selectable somewhere in Settings;
2. Some form of
dividing line to clearly indicate the bottom of those formats and the start of an alphabetical list of of other supported formats;
3. Other supported formats, possibly also selectable but probably not, as other regularly used formats can be added to the first list.
Optimum ease of use, while retaining direct access to all available formats, no special setting to know exists and its location.

Providing a way to select the formats displayed below the dividing line might actually a good idea, provided that the default is to display all available formats; the selection tables for the formats to be displayed above and below the divider could be displayed on tabs in the same location.
The option to select the formats to be displayed below the divider could easily be added later, if desired.
