XnView Software

I like to use the Thumbnails + Labels view. See attached example. Two of the lower level folders have images on their covers in the attached example, but will note that the WG11 folder has no image. I believe this is because in WG11 there are folders each of which have images, but it does not have any images in it that are not in a folder. By contrast, NHCA and WG17 both have a combination of images, and folders with images, i.e. unfoldered images, in those containers.

I like to have an image on the folder and have tried for example taking one of the WG11 images from one of its subfolders and placing it alone in the WG11 folder. I thought that would force an image to appear on the WG11 folder. It does not. I have tried closing/reopening the folder tree, closing/reopening XnViewMP, and also just pressing F5 for a refresh. Nothing works. I have tried this on other folders as well.

Can someone explain to me how XnView decides if an image appears on a folder, because apparently it is more than just requiring unfoldered images to be contained within.

currently you need to have images in folder not only in subfolder

Thanx for quick reply. I must be misunderstanding you. See my 2nd paragraph in the original post, repeated below in italics. I think I am doing what you said I should, namely having an image (that is not in a subfolder) in the top folder. ??

What I find is that for all folders for which there is an image on the folder, there is at least one image in that folder that is not in a subfolder. However, for folders with no images, due to the fact that they have no images in them that are not in subfolders, if I add in an un-foldered image it does not cause an image to appear on the parent folder.

even if you select the folder and use 'View>Rebuild thumbnails'?

I have not tested this but try renaming the photo in the top folder so that it comes before the folder names alphabetically.

Thanx much. Rebuild solves the problem. I was unaware of that command.

For those who want to use it you must be on the parent folder that contains the folders lacking images. The rebuild command does not appear to work if you are at the root folder and wish to rebuild all subfolders.

Glad to know this exists.
