Slow performance will large file count

Can someone explain why it takes so long to display an image after selecting it from a very large set of files?

For example, I have a few hundred thousand images in one folder.
When I double click on one it takes quite some time for it to be displayed.
I see the same type of delay after selecting the Esc key to return to the file list.

When monitoring CPU core activity I see little use of multiple cores when
opening the same folder. I would expect the application to make better
use of the cores when populating the browser.

Computer is a Mac Studio M2 Ultra with 128GB of memory.

Do you use cache of thumbnails? If you wait that all thumbnails are created same problem?

I do not cache the thumbnails and use the embedded ones if they exist.

It is all fine once the thumbnails are created.

It takes some time to generated them and monitoring the CPU core usage shows many of them idle.

so the problem is during thumbnail creation, right?
