disable tabs

after searching through options for some minutes to just disable the tabs, i found the use only one view option under view.
novice users (like me) search forever to find this one and figure out what it actually does.
suggestion -> place an option under TABS -> (x) use tabs.
easy as that and much more logical.
also i would like a rightclick-option when clicking on a tab -> don´t use tabs.
another unlogical thing is, when you use "only one view" and the view tabs is checked, you doubleclick an image and it is opened, but a tab shows up in the view window. unnecessary.

=> what about switching between Browser and that View with mouse alone?

Hello !
- If I get you alright, you would wish an option to disable
totally the tabs in
all cases ? You can do this already from the "View" menu, just remove the nick of the entry…
- We have also such an option in Total Commander (were the tabs are a real gazworks), very useful for me since I dont' use them in that programme currently… but handier, since we can set it as a button in a tool-bar, then toogle quickly "tabs ¦ no tabs"…

hi,
yes and no

.
1. i would like an option to totally remove tabs - yes.
2. you can do this already - no.
-> if you uncheck this from the view menu AND have unchecked "only one view" xnview loads the pictures in the background to tabs! so they are all in memory, wasting it.
you only remove the view..

Yeah it only hides the tab bar (like it should) and nothing else. Far as I know, there are no way to fully disable tabs in XnView. Hiding the tab bar and using the "only one view" is a workaround.
And about the only one view option, it is meant to work way that there are only one view tab open, but there can also be a browser tab open and I don't see why this is "unnecessary". It is a useful feature and it shouldn't be changed. And the placement of this option is right, because it isn't "only one tab" option.
If you want an option to fully disable tabs, you better make a new request for it and don't request to change for this feature.

hm,still don´t see the use. in view mode, there is already a button to switch to the browser again. and if a tab opens for one pic its only waste of space. but of cause if someone disables the toolbar..ok. this wasn´t also my main point to get rid of the "only one view". just the way its handled. so if the toolbar is there, the tab is unnecessary, imo. but as you said, its a workaround and i would like the tab behavior changed/be better/more userfriendly accessable.
But...

Well, totally disable could be useful for some users, but the snag is how to set a handy ¦ user-friendly fast command ?
- An be able to switch this "On ¦ Off" quickly, to make everybody happy ?
- Like I said above, the command of Total Commander disables the tabs totally, and it's handy… But here in XnView, impossible to add buttons in this damn tool-bar, like we discussed about this a while ago…

to switch it on again,hm, maybe
MENU - WINDOW - use tabs. or i would change maybe the MENU - VIEW - TABS behavoir. so if its unchecked the tabs would stop to load in the background. this would maybe be the most easy solution.
for example, if you uncheck the preview i don´t think it renders it the background? would only be a waste of time. so why is the tabs behavior different? or what do you think?

yes,pitty.
For me---

I don't know how the previews are processed when disabled, I'ld be glad to hear a Pierre's statement about this…
- To hide
and disable the tabs, for me only a button is really handy, 'cause I guess that menu-entries are not, and I don't use the keys a lot for some (physical) reasons…
- So, back to —>
"Pierre, pleaaaaase ! Change that damned tool-bar system!"

- Just my opinion, of course…

Currently, the logic is that 'Tabs' is just another way to display opened windows, similar to what you can see under the Menu 'Window'.
Therefore, you can hide 'Tabs' while still being able to load additional Windows... and some people actually prefer this behaviour.
Clo wrote:I don't know how the previews are processed when disabled
They are not processed at all. That's one reason why I disable Preview: in order to get instant response while navigating through thumbnails
(the new interruptible thread is good, but still not perfect...).

hm, so there are people who hide the tabs, click on/open various pictures and want them to resist in memory without seeing the tabs?? don´t think so. tabs are great way for switching. if you use them, you don´t hide them.i never hid tabs eg in my browser since this option was introduced with firefox. and that was years ago. of course imo.
still would be nice to get a better approach to an option turn off tabs (completely) under config/tabs?! thats all...

I don't see why people can't use "View menu -> Tabs" maybe a hint/note about this should be added to Tabs in options about "View menu -> Tabs"

There is no other option also for e.g. Status bar, Tool bar, there is just menu > View, but maybe option do disable tabs could be in Options > Tabs though.
