Taking a past bug report seriously, in v1.8.0 the appearance of the stars that represent ratings in the preview panel has been changed.
The new display makes it very hard to tell which ratings are currently set or not.
Furthermore, it seems very unreasonable that clicking on a star with a certain rating sometimes adds a rating and other times removes it. It is by no means the only one correct approach.
It would be more intuitive if clicking on a star added a rating, and clicking the remove button (i.e. 0 stars) removed the rating.

Please revert the change, or at least add an option to restore the previous stars.

it is obvious as day that old variant was unreadable and confusing

no, there should not be 6 stars in 5-star rating (especially when it is used with color label control in front)
and clicking on start to unassign is the only one correct approach here

ps. I would probably only add blurred/semi-transparent background, like in CaptureOne
