XnView Software

Until now, I was using Irfanview in Windows and with Wine. I no longer want to use a Windows software in Linux, and want to change to using XnView.

I clean up and restore public domain drawings and prints, mostly black & white. The most important tool is the color replacer in 0 to 255 grayscale range. Can anyone point me to where/how the color replacer of XnView? By pointing, I meant in the manual.

I moved from Irfanview to XnView when I discovered that it had a 'Levels' adjustment option, my preferred tool when enhancing scans; as far as I know it still isn't supported in the other software unless possibly under a different name. You might therefore, as well as exploring the viewer menus which are now becoming somewhat complicated, take a look at:

Image > Adjust... > Levels... And also possibly: Effect > Effect... > Map -- Saturation

The Levels option is assigned the useful keyboard shortcut 'L'.

I normally convert nominally black-and-white images to grayscale before using Levels, let me know if you know a better method!

Due to the number of interface changes, and also the addition of new options, there is now little up-to-date documentation available.
