How to use Exiftool in XnView MP Flatpack install?

I installed Xnview MP using flatpak. The exiftool tab shows nothing. I had previously installed exiftool on ubuntu separately. So as a workaround i tried uninstalling the system's exiftool. Still nothing in the xnview exiftool tab. I have tried using flatseal to give permissions to xnview to use exiftool:

under "filesystem", I enabled all toggles, and added two "other files" entries: /usr/share/perl5 and /usr/bin . Still nothing in the exiftool tab.

I have looked for a settings entry for exiftool path and did not find one.

Does anyone know how to get exiftool working in flatpak installed xnview ? (current xnview mp version is 1.9.4 64-bit (Linux) - Libformat 7.227 , Date Sept 29 2025

The AppImage version works for both exiftool and maps. I'm fine using the appimage version, but it would be nice to install it for better integration with the OS. I'm unfamiliar with AppImage, so now I'm trying to figure out how to install it properly.....

why don't you use the current .deb version from here https://www.xnview.com? Runs great in my Mint 22.2.

I have tried it. I can't remember for sure, but I recall it had some issues. I think I will try it again.

Map tab works fine after enabling network permissions using flatseal.

@eddified: Something to remember is that Flatpak versions are not produced by Pierre, so there is at least some delay before new versions appear there, whereas Deb versions are available to download immediately, and earlier versions are available here the the case of a glitch.

Thank you for that point.

Update: on my ubuntu machine (24.04 LTS), the appimage version and the .deb version both have issues with displaying heic thumbnails. But the flatpak version displays the thumbnails well.

I'll use the flatpak version for now -- The exiftool tab doesn't work, but Thumbnails are more important.

Eddified,

With version 1.9.4, XnViewMP now allows for using a locally installed version of Exiftool.
Go to Tool->Settings:Integration:Paths

There you will find an option for "Exiftool path". Use the picker to point this option to your locally installed exiftool binary. Then quit XnViewMP. Make sure there are no exiftool processes running (kill any that are) and then restart XnViewMP.

See if that populates the Exiftool tab. If not, I would guess there's a permissions problem.

Thank you.

I am using 1.9.4, but do not see that option.

on the "integration: paths" pane I only see:

"Configuration: Current user"
"Settings-General: System - Current User"
"Settings-Other: System - Current User"
"Database-catalog: System - Current User"
"Database-thumbnails: Same as catalog"

That makes me think you're not running 1.9.4. Check Help->About to make sure. [Edit: I see you did in your first post; thanks]
If it does indeed say 1.9.4 then something is wrong with your build.

Use the filter at the top of the Settings dialog and enter Exiftool and see if there's a hit. Perhaps Pierre put it in the wrong place on the Linux release but I doubt it. It was originally located elsewhere (I don't remember where; General maybe) but he moved it to Integration:Paths. It's the bottom item on that page.

If the settings filter shows no hits at all, then the option is missing and the build you're running is just broken. If it came directly from Pierre, he'll have to fix it.

Perhaps someone else running 1.9.4 on Linux will see this and can confirm the presence of the option for "Exiftool Path"...

--------UPDATE
I just checked the release notes, and it looks like perhaps Pierre only put the option for Exiftool path in the Windows version. I'm surprised by that and was not aware.

If that's correct, you might have to wait for this feature to percolate down to the Linux version to try my advice. I don't know why it would have been omitted from Linux, sorry. Perhaps something to do with testing the new bundled version of Exiftool...

That being said, I suggest you check to see if there's an executable exiftool in the distribution you have. I think it's supposed to be in the "addon" subdirectory (unless it's different on Linux). Make sure that executable is there and that permissions are appropriate so that the xnviewmp application can execute it. The symptom of the panel not being populated is consistent with the exiftool binary being missing or otherwise unusable.
