EXIF data selective extraction

From a batch of 100s of images, how can I extract the "Image number" parameter of their respective EXIF info?
The images have been renamed to a new file name from the one given by the camera at the time of original picture taken - but I need to extract globally the original Image number, so I can sort/reconstruct the order as the images were actually taken.
Manualy, one-by-one, I know how to do it, but I am talking about 100s of images.
Extracting into a text file or inserting into the current file name would be fine.

Perhaps you can use batch rename, and use EXIF-Image ID

Tried that first..., does not work:
In batch rename, inserting the "Image ID" is not working and "Image name" is not listed as an insert option.
In the EXIF details, "Image ID" is not listed at all. "Image name" is listed.
Any suggestion?

Please fix the above...
...I can include in the batch rename exotic parameters such as "exposure bias" and "white balance" from the EXIF data, but not the - probably one of the most essential parameter - original image file (=sequence) name or "Image name". Again, Image ID is not solving thi sproblem.
Thanks a lot!

...sorry for including the e-mail, my mistake.
...hope you can solve the problem.
(just a note, ACDSee, which does not have by far as robust renaming option as XnView, extracts the image numbers - but could not handle 24 HH time format)
