Installing new version - How to

I'm sure this is covered somewhere, but I did not see it in the FAQ's. Anyway, just a short answer question:

Is it recommended to install XnView over the prior version, or to uninstall the earlier version first, and then install. This is my first version upgrade so I want to get off to a good start.

With any program, it's usually best to install the upgrade to a new folder or to remove the old version first (I suggest a new folder). If you install to a new folder, you then have the option of testing the new version and then going back to the old one if there are problems. You can always delete the old one at a later point if disc space becomes an issue.

Thanks for your response.

Your advice is probably good, so I will do as you suggested. There are some programs that install over their predecessor or else you will loose your preferences, histories, databases, or whatnot. It simply depends on how the programmers choose to handle things. One such program is Webroot's Window Washer program. I only point this out because I prefer to have as little doubts as possible when installing software. Thanks again!

Oh, now I think I remember that this program does not have an uninstall, per se, correct? Then my big issue, is about cache. Can the cash files from the old version work with the new version. I'll probably just run it and find out, but just wanted to suggest on behalf of people whose computer is wired to a few sticks of dynamite maybe a method for upgrading be suggested some way.

I'd say no as Pierre did fix a bug in thumbnail caching so I'd just delete your cache folder and install the new version over the top or delete the whole XnView folder but keep your INI file.

What I generally do when updating a prog is to create a second copy of the current installation folder and all it's files, then install the update into that copy (though it'd also work to install it into the original folder and keep the copy as the backup). That way I can usually keep my prefs and such (although I noticed that 1.82 didn't retain all of my prefs when I did this. Some, but not all), yet I can still easily revert if there's a problem.
