Hi,

like to know if it's possible to see/read the IPTC data (of jpgs) with the WinXP Explorer.
If ... please tell me, witch fields in XN-View must be filled.

Need some "urgent" help in this topic.

I need something to fill the given fields (like data-Dateiinfo/ discription-Beschreibung & source-Quelle).
If they are filled, my lovely customer can read/see them.
--> It might be a litte bit to diffficult to install the prog on every customers pc. ;o)

Can I do that with XN-View or do I need another prog?

You can edit IPTC with xnView!

In Windows Explorer on Windows XP SP2 when opening the properties of an image file you can see various fields like title, subject, author, and so on, I guess that you mean those fields.
I've just tried out and filled the ITPC data in XnView, but those fields remained empty. These fields seem to be proprietary fields of Windows and currently cannot be filled with XnView. I'm just guessing here, maybe somebody else (Pierre?) knows more about these fields.

Seems if nobody tried the posted ShellExtension.
It does everything that was requested.

You can view IPTC fields in the details view by customizing the columns to choose which fields you want to see.
IPTCExt also adds pages to the property sheet for jpeg files that allows you to edit IPTC data for one or multiple files.

I tried it. AND it's not the thing I asked for.
I'd like to fill the fields that normal users (without any helpers) can view.
I don't want to add several fields.

I know, that I can edit fields with XN-View. But these fields are not shown to a normal Windows user. At least not to a XP 2nd Edition user.
With additional tools like XN-View or similar proggs it's possible. But I'd like to fill the Windows fields.

I also tried with other tools (Photoshop and Exifer) neither of which shows the fields if I fill them in windows explorer. However the information is stored in the image file right at the beginning (I can see this in a binary viewer). I start getting curious what these fields are...

Though it's a little bit late:

Microsoft Digital Image Suite fills the title, author and label fields. The new Windows Media Player 11 fills some of them also.

Hi

Try PixVue - www.pixvue.com. Among other things (read, write IPTC/XMP metadata, etc...) it allows to add new columns, with Exif AND IPTC/XMP metadata in the Details view of Explorer. You can choose wich one do you want to display. I think this is what you are looking for.

@ Eneraldo - thanks for your help - but it does not work the way I need it. PixVue works like many other progs - it shows on MY pc the EXIF and IPTC data. But not on a pc without PixVue installed.

Yesssss!

It works! At least I filled some infos in and these have been displayed with the MS Explorer as well.
BUT not with Xn-View!
You can view it with the Hex-Editor --> the new info will be displayed on the right hand side.
I guess the information is not compatible with the IPTC standard.

I'm affraid that the only way to have what you want would be IF XP or any Microsoft OSs give native support to EXIF and/or IPTC. By now I don't know any. XP SP 2, which I use, do not. Microsoft have it's own proprietary metadata scheme displayed as "summary" in the file's Properties window. This IS NOT EXIF nor IPTC standards.
The only way I know now to display EXIF and/or IPTC in Windows is through some application.
If I'm wrong, please anybody let me know.

Win2k's explorer file properties> "summary" fields use alternate data streams (a NTFS feature). More information on this can be found at Wikipedia.

Nobody questions that. The point is that these "summary" fields are Microsoft's own metadata format, and shouldn't by no means be (mis)taken as EXIF and/or IPTC which are different metadata standards.
As far as I know no Microsoft's OSs (I think macs neither) do support natively EXIF nor IPTC, what, I think, are necessary to display EXIF/IPTC values in Details view of Windows Explorer, that is what AschER ask for in this forum an begin this thread. I fail to see what these "alternate data streams" have to do with all this, but I'm just a photographer, not a programer.
To know more about IPTC see www.iptc.org, and EXIF in http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/EXIF, and a deeper discution on metatagging of digital image files (among other issues, including keywording, Digital Asset Management, etc.) using IPTC metadata see www.controlledvocabulary.com and the controlledvocabulary group (members only) in Yahoo.
