I've got a large amount of jpg2000 pictures, created using the plugin supplied with IrfanView (Luratech I guess).
Xnview creates jpg thumbnails rocket fast, but jpg2000 thumbnails take like 30 seconds each, at least.

Which jpg plugin do you have? Luratech (lwf_jp2.dll) or Jasper(Xjp2.dll)?

jasper as it seems, where do I get the luratech one for xnview?

thanks it is better now, but still not very fast...

It's because they're JP2k. The JP2k format is inherantly very slow (no doubt one of the reasons why it hasn't achieved broader use/support yet). Take a shot of your desktop and save it as both a JPG and a JPEG2000, now open each image. No matter what program you use, you will find that the JPG opens instantly while the JP2k takes a few seconds. Some programs are slower than others (speed is the main complaint about the jasper plugin), but none can be considered fast, low speed is a week point in the format itself, which can't be changed unless/until the format itself is changed.
Now, since xnview has to read each image in order to create a thumbnail from it, the slower the format is to read, the longer it takes to make thumbnails.


Depending on what you're doing with these images, you may want to try the LWF format instead. It's luratech's propietary version of the JP2 format, but is noticeably faster.
