red-eye removal method

firstly, i love this program, my compliments and gratitude to the author
secondly, my reason for this posting: i have an ultra-compact camera that frequently yields images of subjects with "red-eye", i like the correction xnview gives, but am curious as to the method being used, i.e. what is going on behind the scenes - the reason i ask is that i find it comparable to the rather lengthy method of using the color mixer of gimp or photoshop, but worry that perhaps i am losing proper tonality and catchlight
any information will be appreciated
thank you for your time
