Tags: Advantages over multiselection?

I'm not quite clear what the tags are for (Browser > View > Tags > Show tag box): We have selection which allows for selecting individual files. And we have tags. The only difference between selection and tags that I can see is that you can open a file and close it and the tags are still there.

The tags might be good, but I think they should be a bit more flexible, not just on/off. E.g. tagging images with numbers might be good. Then people could mark individual files to remember how many copies they want to make. Or they could score the images.

Are there other advantages?

It looks like a simple queue to me. I like the idea of adding to queue while viewing in fullscreen. Afterwards, queue can be processed (move, copy, convert).

yep. It's for queuing.
And it has actual advantages.
Ever worked with some thousands of files in a folder and multi-selecting some of them?
And then deselecting them by accident. That's a PITA.
And tagging solves this by adding some more "persistency" exactly where it is needed.

marsh's point is an important use too.

"numbered" tagging (your idea) is not a good thing IMO.
It adds bloat and more user interaction (selecting the number) is required.
Makes it more complicated to use and most importantly slows down your workflow.;)

Small "request" for Pierre:
Clicking the tag-box should not change the current selection.

Thank you, marsh & MaierMan for your explanations. I'm convinced, now. :-)

I didn't know that tagging works other modes than browser mode. Actually it does work in Fullscreen Light mode (context menu is broken in Fullscreen light, btw), but not in View mode and Fullscreen mode (bug).

In View mode and all context menus there should be a menu item somewhere that allows for tagging and untagging the current image.

No, i disagree, tag is for browser mode, not in edit mode...

I think we are stuck in that 'Browser fullscreen' vs 'Viewer' issue... and as several people already said, the 2 fullscreen modes don't make sense at all.
If it is not possible to have only 1 fullscreen/view mode for technical reasons, they should at least be as similar as possible.

This browser fullscreen vs Viewer is still hot and probably should be discussed in the other thread.

No, because you are not in the same mode (EDIT/VIEW)
The better way will be perhaps to remove EDIT mode, and add possibility to edit picture in the browser/preview...

YES! This is how I want to work.

This is the only thing remaining (other issues have been solved or are discussed elsewhere).
