Is it possible to introduce a feature for viewing pictures directly from rar, zip and tgz archives without unpacking them...that is as the archives were folders? :)

thanks! ;)

Think that would be a nice feature. Currently this is not available in XnView.

(XnView DeLuxe, the commercial version can do this, already).

Cannot this be done by some kind of "plugin" by someone else? Does XnView has something like plugin support?

A feature like this would be very slow, your virus scanner would be consently checking the archive and thrashing the HDD too. In the end, it's better to unpack files really.

Possible with TC

:) Hello !
- This should be possible whether you'ld use Total Commander as file-manager.
Notes : free trial version, not limited at functions… Don't worry about the look, the official screen-shot has not been remade for 10 years, this must be done soon

- In this program, you have just to open the archive without unpacking it (Enter), select the image file and press Enter again.
¤ Indeed, the images file-types must be associated with XnView !
- To view pics in that mode, a line must be added in the main INI file of Total Commander.
- You can set XnView as a partner-program too, in order to view pics as quick-view in the TC-Lister (read only), it works from archives too.
- If a virus scanner running in background is boring, you can disable it for "Packed" files…

- If you would be interested in this, please just PM me, or contact me via e-mail (XNVIEW "as is" in the subject to avoid the quarantine !), to get details.

Claude

thank you for the hint but i already know total commander and it isn't excatly what i meant, because it needs to extract...i meant like latest versions of acdsee.

thanks anyway! ;)

it needs to extract
Any tool would need to extract an image from a zip in order to view it. Perhaps what you really want is a tool that extracts to memory, and not to disk? If extracting to disk concerns you, perhaps you could point your temp folder to a RAM disk?

Except for the RAM extraction, TotalCommander does exactly what you describe. It is soon to have "native" thumbnails, too!

Workaround ?

:) Hello John !
Except for the RAM extraction, TotalCommander does exactly what you describe.
- Indeed ! I thought that creating a Ram-drive, then setting the TEMP dir. for ZIP within that Ram-drive should allow to extract the pics in RAM, at least from the ZIP-archives…
- It was easy to create a Ram-drive under Win 3.1 (limited to ~37 MB)
- It should be enough for the most pics viewing. Under Win9x and newer, I don't know… But some external tool might allow to create a Ram-drive at the the boot-time.
