At present the preview window extends over the entire bottom of the program window, but pictures are rarely very wide, so most of that space is wasted.
How about a preview window extending only over the lower part of the Folders frame? It is true that if you close the folders frame you would no longer see the preview window... But it could be an option available when you display the Folders frame

XnView allows setting the layout of the three panes/areas (folder tree, preview, and thumbnails) in the browser the way you want, already. Try "View->Layout->Third_menu_item_from_top.

Couldn't the layout specified by this guest, and also the layout used by me, be the default layout for XnView? IOW, when installing XnView, this will be the selected layout by default.

Yes, perhaps. This layout is better.
Who wants this layout by default?
