Thanks for taking the time to read about my issue.
First off, my system & XnView info:
-----------------------------------------
- Windows 8.1 64-bit (originally 8, updated it to 8.1 in mid-February 2014)
- User Account Control (UAC) is turned off
- Original XnView version when I first bought the computer in December 2013 was 1.99 (or something like that, don't remember exactly) but this wasn't an issue in that version
- Current version: 2.20, which I just updated from 2.12
- Settings in XnView are saved to .ini, not registry
Okay, so I have Windows 8.1 set to have .jpg, .jpeg files open in XnView 2.20 and before I updated from the 1.99 version, when I double-clicked on a .jpg or .jpeg file, both the browser tab would open to the left of the .jpg/.jpeg file tab and now it doesn't do that. I've went through the setting numerous times (just today, I've got over 3 hours into it), but I cannot find the answer.
I've also Googled for an answer, but couldn't find it, plus I read the XnViews FAQs, the Wiki, and searched the forums twice with the following terms:
1) browser tab
2) open file with both file tab browser tab
So I realize this isn't probably a big deal, but like most others, I want it to work with certain features, so if somebody knows how to do this, please help.
Thank You!
Can somebody tell me how to get the browser tab to open?

Welcome to the forum, BigDummy (-:
Is Launch Browser at Startup (Tools » Options... » General » Operations » Startup) activated?
You may also want to set Mode when starting with a file to Fullscreen - Browser.

XnTriq, thanks for the reply.

1) "Is Launch Browser at Startup (Tools » Options... » General » Operations » Startup) activated?"
Yes it is, but making that one change, then closing XnView, then double-clicking on a .jpg file didn't do anything.
2) "You may also want to set Mode when starting with a file to Fullscreen - Browser."
Yes, that worked, however, I don't want to have it start in fullscreen, it's too much of hassle.
While some might say it's a small price to pay for this inconvenience (for me at least) given that I'm getting a free program, I'm a picky S.O.B. and that's why I switched from Irfanview to XnView.
So, thanks to the developer(s) of XnView for giving this away for free to cheap-skates such as myself & everything else about it is great about, but unless I can get it to start with the browser tab when double-clicking on a file without having it open in fullscreen, I'm going to have to rethink it.
I mean, when I first installed it on my new computer, I couldn't get the shell extension thing to work (the context menu was there, but no arrow and no thumbnail when right-clicking on .jpg thumbnail file) in My Pictures folder and I spent more time than I have on this thing and then I found out that since I'm on a 64-bit machine, I had to use the 64-bit shell extension.
So, do I have to update XnView 2.20 32-bit to the current 64-bit one to get it to start with the browser tab?
I don't want that, I mean do I really need a 64-bit program to view pictures? Most of what I've seen on numerous websites about 64-bit applications is that most of the time, you don't really need it.
Could the problem be that I just recently started saving the settings to an .ini file, but there's some registry entry still left that's preventing this?
Thanks!

There isn't a 64-bit version of XnView Classic...BigDummy wrote:So, do I have to update XnView 2.20 32-bit to the current 64-bit one to get it to start with the browser tab?
Have you tried starting XnView with Admin rights and then seeing if the Launch browser at startup setting is written to your ini file?
You could also install the zip version in a location you can write to and try that -- if that doesn't work the way you want maybe it's a Windows 8 issue??
You know that if XnView doesn't open the way you want you can open the Browser tab with one click on this icon:
And have you taken a look at XnviewMP, still in beta but coming on nicely now?

Please make sure that View » Tabs (Ctrl+Shift+M) are enabled.

Re: Can somebody tell me how to get the browser tab to open?
cday,
Yes, you're right, I guess there isn't a 64-bit version of XnView.
Yes, I am the admin of the computer and have the only user account in the computer.
Yes, in the xnview.ini file in my %AppData%\XnView folder, the setting is LaunchBrowserAtStartup=1 which to me means it's set to open the browser tab at startup.
No, I'm not trying any more installations nor uninstallations then reinstallations...this is getting ridiculous and I'm a very patient person.
Yes, it could be a Windows problem, but updating to 8.1 is highly unlikely the cause of it. As I said, when I first bought the pc 4 months ago, it worked, but with a different version of XnView.
No, again, I'm picky, so it boils down to either this feature works or bye-bye XnView and welcome back with open arms Irfanview!!! I mean, I've been up all night trying to figure this out, read dozens of stuff from a Google search and yet nothing does the trick, so it seems that whatever issues that were fixed in the last two releases I downloaded have created other issues. Sorry (actually I'm not), but I do web development so I know a couple of things about computers, but if I had programmers who did this sloppy of work, I'd fire them!!!
No, I tried XnViewMP and I find it lacking, don't even understand why it's being developed, but that's just me.
Now I see on the home page that the latest version isn't even listed yet, must still be in beta or something. I checked for updates through the program, not by visiting the site first, otherwise, I would have left it at 2.12, but I still had the problem with that version.
Thanks for the input cday!
XnTriq,
Yes, I read the post, thanks for the link. Not sure how that helps.
To the XnView developers, I will never, ever use this P.O.S. program again. It blows bigger ones than my ole lady!

Re: Can somebody tell me how to get the browser tab to open?
There haven't been very many changes in recent updates, and Windows 8 has caused some issues with XnView software.BigDummy wrote: Yes, it could be a Windows problem, but updating to 8.1 is highly unlikely the cause of it. It might be interesting to try reinstalling the earlier version and seeing if it still works...
Edit:
Earlier versions of XnView are available from http://www.filehippo.com/download_xnview
If a recent change in XnView is the cause of your problem, it would be useful to know so that it can be identified and fixed.

The user must have (unknowingly) changed this setting:cday wrote:If a recent change in XnView is the cause of your problem, it would be useful to know so that it can be identified and fixed.
