Well I tried that browser entry and it didn't work like I thought. I am quite sure that it worked like that in 1.74 :|

:) Hello !

- I can confirm :
browser = 1 or 0 doesn't change anything, while it should; I have always my customized small browser tool-bar…
… while auto = 1 displays the customized grey/blurred icons (I have a disabled = "blurred.bmp" bitmap stated), and
auto = 0
displays only full grey buttons for the disabled / not used yet ones, so it works…
- However, hard to see if the customized greyed bitmap is used (needs to test further), or if the greyed icons are built by the program from the coloured "main.bmp" one…
EDIT : I've added a coloured mark on an icon in the grayed bitmap (possible, since it's a 24 BPP pic), and it doesn't appear on the screen…
- So, either the customized grayed bitmap is no longer used, or the program displays only the greyscale for that bitmap … :?:

- I didn't show these entries in my manual indeed because this "variable" and unexpected behaviour… :?

:mrgreen: Kind regards,
Claude

This is taken from WhatsNew.txt:

Code: Select all

v1.30 (07/Feb/2002): [Changed] Toolbar skin. See skin/toolbar.skn
v1.37 (26/Jun/2002): [ Added ] New skin for toolbar
v1.55 (06/Mar/2003): [ Added ] Toolbar skin showed
                     [ Added ] Disabled toolbar & file toolbar in skin
v1.67 (15/Dez/2003): [Changed] Skins are now in different folder
Two versions seem to be key here:
  • v1.55 introduced new entries to control the main (disabled) and the browser (small) toolbar's appearance.
  • v1.67 marks the end of the toolbar.skn and the beginning of the info.txt “era”.
In an effort to cut out the guesswork once and for all I “resurrected” some of the previous versions of XnView:

v1.30 (07/Feb/2002): \skin\toolbar.skn
[skin5]
label = "Fantasia (Claude Charries)"
filename = "fantasia.bmp"
width = 22
height = 26
v1.46 (08/Nov/2002): \skins\toolbar.skn
[skin5]
label = "Fantasia (Claude Charries)"
filename = "fantasia.bmp"
width = 22
height = 26
v1.66 (23/Oct/2003): \skins\toolbar.skn
[skin10]
label = "Phoenity (Lim Chee Aun)"
filename = "phoenity.bmp"
disabled = "phoenity_.bmp"
small = "phoenity2.bmp"

width = 24
height = 24
v1.70 (16/May/2004): \skins\Phoenity\info.txt
[skin10]
label = "Phoenity (Lim Chee Aun)"
filename = "phoenity.bmp"
disabled = ""
small = ""

width = 24
height = 24
browser = 1
auto = 1
v1.74 (27/Sep/2004): \skins\Phoenity\info.txt
label = "Phoenity (Lim Chee Aun)"
filename = ""
width = 24
height = 24
browser = 1
auto = 1
v1.80.3 (30/Jun/2005): \skins\mezich\info.txt
label = "Mezich (www.mezich.ru)"
width = 24
height = 24
browser = 1
auto = 1
version = 2
main32 = 1
browser32 = 1
Legend: gone / new

I gotta admit that I still have no idea what browser = 0/1 is intended for.
On the weekend I experimented with v1.70, v1.74 and v1.80.3 using every combination of info.txt imaginable, including variations in the order of the entries. I even made screenshots of every test run with info.txt displayed in the preview pane to be able to jump back & forth between results.

I'm kinda at my wits end. :?
Hopefully Pierre will leave us a short note next time he stops by.

Some people may argue that this is trivial, and I basically agree. The skins feature is just the icing on the cake.
On the other hand, it sure is a very nice extra, and considering XnView's well deserved popularity, one would expect it to draw more attention from the folks at deviantART or WinCustomize etc.

You have browser if you have a browser.bmp and browser32 for browser32.bmp (mini toolbar).

:) Hello Pierre !
You have browser if you have a browser.bmp and browser32 for browser32.bmp (mini toolbar).

Browser32=1: 32 bit image depth, browser32.bmp

Pierre's comments made me realize that there's no point in doing my little “experiments” on my PC, because Windows 2000 doesn't support 32-bit skins. You just won't see the effects of browser = 0/1 on Windows 95/98/ME/NT/2K.
Therefore I repeated the tests the other day — this time on XP.

%ProgramFiles%\XnView\skins\Test\:

Code: Select all

main.bmp
browser.bmp
main32.bmp
browser32.bmp
info.txt
%ProgramFiles%\XnView\skins\Test\info.txt:

Code: Select all

label = "Test (XnTriq)"
version = 2
width = 24
height = 24
auto = 1
browser = 0/1
main32 = 1
browser32 = 0/1
Results:

Code: Select all

+---------+-----------+---------------------+
| browser | browser32 | skin used by XnView |
|  = ?    |   = ?     |    v1.80.3 on XP    |
+---------+-----------+---------------------+
|    0    |     0     |     browser.bmp     |
+---------+-----------+---------------------+
|    0    |     1     |    browser32.bmp    |
+---------+-----------+---------------------+
|    1    |     0     |     browser.bmp     |
+---------+-----------+---------------------+
|    1    |     1     |    browser32.bmp    |
+---------+-----------+---------------------+
It's probably safe to say that we've finally figured that one out now.
I'm afraid we also succeeded in hijacking this thread. :twisted:

When I started XnView, only the default and the "Test 2" skin appeared in the list.
So it appears to me as if XnView "sees" only those skins whose info.txt has its archive attribute set.
Strange, ok i check...
He came, checked, and fixed.
Merci, Pierre!
