Adding favourites (still) not intuitive

Post by Troken »

With every new version of 1.90 I feel really really stupid, because I never remember how to create favourites. It takes me long time to find out. As it is now, you have to click at the star above the thumbnails to do it - and as it is the only way (I know) it's a really old-fashioned and a bad solution. There isn't even an option in the menus for creating favourites.

To make this intuitive you should be able to create a favourite folder by either:
1. right-click the folder and choose "add favourite"
2. drag-n-drop a folder into the favourite-view
3. right-click in the favourite-view (or the favourite-tab) and from there "add favourite"
...or combine some of these.

PS. A totally new suggestion: what about being able to make favourites of individual files?

Thank you, Troken, for raising this matter. I agree in the general statement that handling favourites still needs improvement. And your suggestions are good, too. Especially context menu (right click) would be good.

What we do have is the small toolbar in browser where you can add favourite by clicking on the star and choosing "Add favourite...".

The problem of the adding is that there is no hierarchy shown, you can only add top level favourites. Instead of the simple dialog one should have a dialog to specify the name and select a level/folder in the current hierarchy.

Thanks. I really hope it will be looked into, because the "favourites"-function is one of my... er... favourites. I use it daily.

4 times "acknowledged" :-) I think the drag'n drop would be intuitive as well (at least I tried and failed)

I seem to have a bad day today as it took me nearly 10 minutes to find out... EDIT: Here's someone else not finding out how to do: http://newsgroup.xnview.com/viewtopic.p ... highlight= We're growing in numbers ;-(

@Pierre: Please, add some other means to set favourites as it's such a great feature :D In case that's not possible for 1.90 final, at least change the tooltip that is shown when hovering over the favourites-icon from "Favourites" to "Favourites. Click on star above thumbnails to set current folder as a favourite." and somehow make the icons more similar (colour is different, one shows a star the other a globe, one shows a folder the other doesn't - is there anything in common?? :( ).

Ähm, there's a UI :bug: Click into the text input field next to the star icon and edit the path however you like it and then choose add - now, the path the user entered it ignored (but shall be used as long as the user is allowed to edit the text!!) but the currently displayed folder uses. Either use the entered text (I prefer this as it makes it extremely quick to paste a path from my file manager) or make the input field read-only and inactive (gray) (I'd discourage that as it removes an efficient way to set a specific folder as favourite).

Sorry but i don't understand???

I extract the icon from the folder, it's the same icon in win explorer...

Uhm, yea, was not that clear *turning red* See the image

4) the tooltip is telling "there exist a favourite feature" but gives absolutely no hint how favourites are created. As long as creation of favourites does not work inside the favourites pane (drag & drop etc), the tooltip has to provide such a hint (without, people won't find out how to add favs!). A suggestion is in the quoted part of my old posting.

3) The favourites icon does not change with the skin, but the "add favourite" changes - hence, the two favourite icons do not show that they are related to each other (neither in default skin 1) and even worse in other skin 2))

Is it understandable now? *hoping*

Exactly that's the point, as the "add fav"-icon is NOT extracted out of the explorer :-/ Either both or none. At the moment they give users no visual hint "hey, user, we belong together!" ;-) see 1) and 2)

Perhaps one reason for the confusion with favourites is the fact that the bookmarks are displayed as folders whereas the folders are displayed as stars:

See discussion in topic Favourites: Context menu for more details.

Well, the icons and symbols are one thing for sure, but if I may return to the original issue, it should become easier to create favourites. The current way - and only way - is confusing.

While talking about symbols, I have stars as symbols in the favourite-pane, no confusion there.

B3: Now the right-click in the favourites-window works (to create new entry)! Cheers!

Indeed, so it should be possible to change also for the main skin then, Pierre??

However, folders have still 'folder' icon, not a star.
