Explanations about metadata settings

Post by oops66 »

Pierre, can you please explain in detail, the behavior of the news following settings :
1-) Tools\Settings\Metadata\Read Hierarchical Keywords ( the 4 possibilities: "|" "/" "\" ":" ) ?
2-) Tools\Settings\Metadata\Automaticaly apply parent Keywords (crtl+click) ?
3-) Why not an option to export "rating", "color label" and "comment" into IPTC metadata too (instead only export to XMP) ?

Some software write hierarchical IPTC keywords with a separator.
Photographs|Flowers
For example, if you use IPTC Dialog (IPTC only), and if you assign a category, the field added use '|'
2-) Tools\Settings\Metadata\Automaticaly apply parent Keywords (crtl+click) ?
It's a setting for the quick category panel (with info). If you click on a category, all parents will be assigned too.
3-) Why not an option to export "rating", "color label" and "comment" into IPTC metadata too (instead only export to XMP) ?
If you would like to import these datas, i think that export is needed. By perhaps it's better to have 2 settings, one for reading and one for writing...

Yes but within IPTC categories only 3 chars maximum are allowed no? and in this case it is no very useful ...
or maybe, these news categories are written also inside the IPTC field Keywords with as you said: Photographs|Flowers , is it the case ?

And these others separators ("/" "\" ":") are used, I guess, with some others programs ?

OK, I see

Yes 2 settings please, (one for reading from photos metadata and one for writing to photos metadata) must be added.

Because I do not want a destructive behavior for the photos (no destructive for pictures and no destructive for embedded metadata too, without a user approbation via a prompt or a setting)

I don't use IPTC category but IPTC keywords

Houps sorry, i've made a mistake. It's not possible to export "rating", "color label" in IPTC. And export in XMP is not destructive (like IPTC)

OK, thank you Pierre for these information.
But when I say "no destructive" I mean than it must not be possible to modify, add, substract or else... data without the user approbation (via settings or prompt).

So you would like 2 settings for XMP rating/label/keywords?

So it's not possible to use "rating" in IPTC? Rating in XMP is a standard? When I rate the image, it will be automatically written into the file - XMP (and in XnView DB), or only in DB?

Yes, one for the ability to read from images files embedded metadata (XMP in this case) --> then store (write) to the XnView data base
And the other one, for the ability to read from the Xnview data base --> then store (write to synchronize) to the images files embedded metadata (.jpg, .tif, and so...).
xnview wrote:...It's not possible to export "rating", "color label" in IPTC...
But Why ?
xnview wrote:...I don't use IPTC category but IPTC keywords...
So it is also possible with IPTC then ?
And if it is possible for IPTC too (into a future XnViewMP version): Also 2 settings (ability to read & ability to write)

No there is no rating field in IPTC. Rating in XMP is a standard, hum a standard Microsoft & adobe use different setting :-(
And if you change the rating or color label, XMP is changed AND DB

2 pass?

There is no rating in IPTC :-) Some old software use Urgency but it's not a standard

import AND export keywords in IPTC/XMP settings?

Maybe 2 setting Tabs into the IPTC/XPM setting dialog is a good solution ? ( one for the ability to write into the Xnview data base, and an other one for the ability to write to the embedded metadata files.)
xnview wrote:... There is no rating in IPTC :-) Some old software use Urgency but it's not a standard
OK I better see now why.
xnview wrote:...import AND export keywords in IPTC/XMP settings?
Yes, by adding the possibility to export keywords to IPTC field too.
But always with the user approbation by default for a "no destructive behavior" (via settings or prompt)

So settings like that:
import rating from XMP
export rating in XMP
import color label from XMP
export color label in XMP
import keywords from XMP/IPTC
export keywords in IPTC
export keywords in XMP
?

Exactly !
And with at least the export function (export=write to embedded jpg, tif, and so... metadata) disabled by default in XnView.
I think for the import function to XnView datadase (import=read from embedded metadata images files) , this function can be enabled by default in XnView (no destructive behavior for the images files)

Thank you Pierre for the news options into MP v0.21:
The "Export DB Category to XMP/IPTC Keyword" ( OFF by default)

But Personally I think:
"Export Rating in XMP Metadata"
"Export Color Label in XMP Metadata"
"Write Comments in XMP (Description&user comments)"
Should also be OFF by default in XnView for a "No Destructive Behavior" ( I mean by "No Destructive Behavior" than XnView must not allow by default the permissions to: modify, add, remove or else... data or metadata without the user approbation.)

Yes for the "Export DB Category to XMP/IPTC Keyword" option (OFF by default) , but...

Strange , here by default (with a fresh xnview.ini file) I have for these others options:
"Export Rating in XMP Metadata"
"Export Color Label in XMP Metadata"
"Write Comments in XMP (Description&user comments...)"
ON by default
