Empty thumbnail for PDF files

Post by helmut »

Note: This problem also occurs in XnView 1.82.4.

As long as "Show thumbnail" is disabled in option you will see an empty thumbnail for PDF files. Instead, I'd expect the Acrobat PDF symbol to be shown.

To reproduce (you will need AFPL Ghostscript installed on your computer):
1.) Disable the setting "Show as thumbnail" fpr AI, PS, PDF files in Tools > Options > Browser > File List > Items displayed
2. ) Close options and browse a folder with a PDF file in it.
--> XnView displays an empty thumbnail for the PDF file. :bug:

:) Hi !
…1.) Disable the setting "Show as thumbnail" fpr AI, PS, PDF files in Tools > Options > Browser > File List > Items displayed…
• Doing this, I don't get any thumb nail ! That seems normal, though.
- Ticking the box again, I get a thumbnail (an open book icon) and a preview.
- Note : Here, I've set *.PDF as "Open in associated programme", that is done correctly.

Correct would be a file with the associated symbol (typically the Acrobat PDF symbol). But instead an empty thumbnail is shown.

I have truckloads of PDF files that have always been correctly rendered as thumbnails, and still do with B3  In the "items displayed" tab in Options|Browser|file list I have all checkboxes checked and in thumbnail view I correctly get the first page of the PDF document rendered as a thumbnail.

Foxit !

Post by Clo »

:) Here, *.PDF is not associated with AcrobatReader, but with Foxit PDF Reader.

- The box unticked for thumb nail means that no thumb nail must be displayed, I guess, must it not?

- When ticked¦displayed, the icon is right here.

Yes. It means that the standard symbol of this file type must be shown (and not the thumbnail). But instead of the standard symbol an empty area is shown when unchecking the "Show as thumbnail". (Bug)

When checking "Show as thumbnail" everything works fine.

Variant---

Post by Clo »

:) So, here is a variant of that bug, since with the box unticked, I get nothing ! Neither an empty area, nor any icon…

I can't reproduce it, i have the icon for Acrobat reader, not an empty thumbnail. Could you post a screenshot?

This is what it looks like:
Image
As you can see one can see the PDF file "IMG_0008.pdf" in the preview, but the appropriate thumbnail is just empty. When rebuilding the thumbnails using "View > Rebuild thumbnails" the Acrobat PDF icon is shown for some view seconds (correct) but then the empty area appears, again.

Not sure whether this detail helps: When browsing another folder and then returning to the folder with the PDF, all thumbnails appear immediately except the one of the PDF file. It is rebuild everytime I browse this folder.
I've tried browsing other folders with PDF files - same result.

As written above, when checking the setting "Show as thumbnail" the thumbnail is shown properly. Also the thumbnail is cached and all thumbnails appear immediately when browsing the folder, again.

Is there a way to find out which application/service disturbs XnView's thumbnail creation for PDF files?

Yes, for some of the PDF files I can see a thumbnail in MS Explorer. I'm still not clear which program generates the thumbnail.
