UI: Shortcuts in Tooltipps
For functions used often there's the toolbar and there are keyboard shortcuts.
I would find it convenient and useful if the tooltip for the symbols in the toolbar would not just describe the function but also mention the keyboard shortcut (if available).

I agree in the principle, however this could be done by each user whether Pierre wouln't have forgotten the field to enter the info-text in the dialogue to set buttons.
So, the shortcut (if any) or anything else could be displayed.
- That could be very useful too when setting a button to start a programme, since currently we get only the file-name of the EXE, that is not meaningful in many cases…

Hello Paul !
• Also, I would prefer the field to customize that item, like it's in Total Commander (last field at the bottom,
click on the red circled
button too
).
• Currently, it's indeed possible to add the short cuts to display there in the resources (for each language…),
but it's a heavier and longer task for Pierre…
• That's one more detail-issue to solve before we'll get languages as text (sigh… ).
And never forget that these features are all linked ones others (hence, the commands must be managed from a nice dialogue, like proposed as a first approach HERE.
- IMHO, this might be done, tested and fully operational before to begin the change to text…

Re: Shortcuts in Tooltipps
One small step for Pierre (I believe), but a big leap for users like myself who are having a hard time memorizing all those shortcuts.helmut wrote:I would find it convenient and useful if the tooltip for the symbols in the toolbar would not just describe the function but also mention the keyboard shortcut (if available).
Very convenient and useful, indeed!
Simplest way

Hello Mr. Librarian !
• Good examples, thanks !
• Like Paul and I said above, the least effort for Pierre should be simply to add the field that is missing anyway,
so the short cuts wouln't be hard-coded (in several languages, the names of the keys vary too)
- thus can be changed, assuming that this could be done later by the user -
- In TC, by default there is the name of the command, but one can write anything there, even a long string…

- What do you think ?

Re: Shortcuts in Tooltipps
Another old topic that I'd like to raise, again. The original issue written in other words:
It's always good to know often used keyboard shortcuts. Currently, XnView displays the available shortcuts in the menus. Additionally it would be helpful and convenient to name the appropriate shortcut in the tooltip.
Some examples:
"Fullscreen" --> "Fullscreen (F11)"
"Refresh" --> "Refresh (Ctrl+R)
"Up one level" --> "Up one level (Backspace)"
"Rename" --> "Rename (F2)"
"Delete" --> "Delete (Del)"

Re: UI: Shortcuts in Tooltipps
It would be nice to see this feature for a future XnView MP.
Re: UI: Shortcuts in Tooltipps
I want to raise this issue, again. Five years after the orginal post, many applications like all MS Office products, for example, list shortcuts in the tooltip of toolbar buttons. This way, the user can learn easily new shortcuts.
For XnView Classic, the translators and/or Pierre and/or a volunteer might add the shortcuts in all translations. (Assuming that the tooltips of the toolbar buttons have definitions separate from the toolbar button label, otherwise the shortcuts would be shown when activating option "Show button text" in category "Interface > Toolbar", tab "Buttons".)
For XnView MP, the user can assign shortcuts him/herself. This means that the only way for shortcuts in tootip in XnView MP is adding them automatically/programmatically.

Re: UI: Shortcuts in Tooltipps
I've added shortcuts and tooltips in the German translation of XnView classic. Pierre has compiled a new German DLL:
In the next couple of days I will try and add shortcuts and hotkeys to French and Russian language, let's see whether this works out.
EDIT:
After some testing I found that there are various problems which cannot be solved unless Pierre introduces additional strings for the tooltips. No need for further testing the German translation with shortcuts.
Could some German native speaker please download the DLL (ZIP archive) and check, whether everything looks alright? It might be that I have added a hotkey to a string that is not just used in the toolbar but also in other places. If this was the case, the tooltip would also be shown, there (wrong). Perhaps when testing you can watch out for such wrong occurences.In the next couple of days I will try and add shortcuts and hotkeys to French and Russian language, let's see whether this works out.
